Interesting listen on Talksport yesterday following Shane Longs' fastest ever Premiership goal for Southampton. Particular mentions around 6:00,16:00 and 24:30.

Barrow 2 Manchester City 2- September 1982. Attendance 3500. Phenomenal game.City sent their first team- from memory Alex Williams was in goal (the first black keeper I had seen), I also think Dennis Tueart played.Still have a soft spot for City after this game

Alex Williams was definitely in goal - the only other thing i remember was him being beaten by a Micky Richmond Brazilianesque screamer
Bring it on!!!

Yes, that phenomenal strike from the late, great Mick Richmond! What a top-notch right full-back he was! From close to the centre-circle he weaved around a couple of Man City players and then unleashed a rocket into the top corner at the Crossbar End (the ASDA top corner). I wrote on here just a few days ago that Josh Kay's goal was the best ever in the history of football (TIC perhaps but only a shade TIC!). Now, having been reminded of the Richmond wonder-goal maybe Josh will have to settle for his being only the second best in the history of football!

I think Royston Taylor got our other goal and I think we led City 2-1. I also think the goal that City scored to make the final score 2-2 came from Denis Tueart at the Holker Street end. Tueart is famous for scoring an overhead-kick in a League Cup Final for City and I think that was a winning goal in the cup final. With that in mind, is my memory playing tricks when I say I feel sure that Tueart's equaliser against Barrow was likewise an overhead kick. As I recall though, good goal though it was, it was only from 6 or 7 yards out so doesn't come close to matching the quality of the Kay strike the other day.

I note Kevin Reeves was in City's Cup Final team but I don't recall him playing for City at Holker Street that night. Reeves had some sort of footballing record back in the early 80's . . . . was it for being the first player to feature in not one but two million pound transfers??? What I do recall is that in the mid-80's Reeves played a handful of games for Barrow; was it under Kidd or David Johnson? I do remember thinking how far and how quickly he had fallen from from his record-breaking heights. I seem to recall he looked unimpressive when he played for Barrow.

So, Cowps has turned 60! Many happy returns to one of our greatest of legends! The first time I spotted Cowps he was actually playing for Netherfield against Barrow at Parkside in a pre-season friendly. It must have been either the August of 1976 or the August of 1977 and he would have been only 17 or 18. But more than anything I do remember how he caught the eye, little knowing that a short while later he would be our player and would go on to give 13 or 14 years of great service.
