London to York on Saturday

Post by thamesvalleyman » Wed Jan 18, 2017 11:17 pm

Hi I'm living in the South and hoping to go to the York game on Saturday.

Just on the off chance, does anyone know of any cheap/sensible priced train tickets London-York return?

Can't find anything even remotely reasonable
..any help appreciated please. Thanks

At a guess I'd say that almost all the cheapest advance tickets have been sold; the best bet seems to be £53 out (most trains) and £43 back (18.31 from York).

It is often cheaper to use split-ticketing (e.g. London - Peterborough, Peterborough - Newark, Newark - York); you stay on the same train but it needs to stop at the stations where you split. It can be time-consuming to do unless you use one of the split-ticketing websites.

It's also worth taking a look at the train company (Virgin East Coast) website as they sometimes have special deals. As an example we booked our tickets online with Virgin well before Christmas and paid as little as £5 each way - but you probably didn't want to know that!!!

£5 each way is unbelievable! Well done for getting that fare!

I have just seen the same fares as you and can't justify nearly £100 return from London (it also costs me £15 to get to London and back), by the time you take in the costs of the match ticket, something to eat and some beers it's too much.

I only knew a few days ago I could make this game so didn't try to book tickets before, but if I knew it was only £5 each way I would have taken the punt!

I will check the split tickets route as last time I went to Holker St I got the fare for £57 return instead of almost £100. Thanks

I have to say that the £5 tickets were VERY limited in number and, unsurprisingly, were quickly snapped up as soon as they went on sale. Other companies have offers from time to time which, although not quite as generous, are more widely available - Torquay for example cost us just over £20 from London using a SWT special offer to Exeter and buying another ticket from there.

Cheap train tickets normally come out around 10/12 weeks prior to the journey. You can get some fantastic savings.Trainline.com is the site I use and they even have a ticket alert facility on the website. Also split journeys can work out a lot cheaper.
My next venture on the train is to Bromley because I am travelling thu and returning sun. Those tickets will be coming out any time now.I used the ticket alert and they will e mail me with reduced prices.

Bahamas Bluebird has helped me out and I got the journey for £47 instead of £98 so it does mean the difference between going and not going...looking forward to the game now.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Can you do anything for the Maidstone game Ryan? Looking at 60 quid + just to get to London, never mind the journey to Kent.

If you are prepared to hit three continents and set off a week before you want to arrive in Maidstone I am sure he will sort something out for you Dave.
