Floodlights

Post by Bingo » Tue Jun 14, 2016 11:13 am

So it's goodbye to the floodlights.

Very sad that the original structures can't be kept/ refurbished or replaced with similar.

The new season starts 7 weeks on Saturday, I am no expert on these things but is this enough time to take down existing and replace. ?

I imagine we'll ask for no midweek home game for first few weeks of season.

Delaying the inevitable by repairing them really.

I never saw what was so nostalgically romantic about them anyway. Onwards and upwards.

As much as the existing lights are an iconic design and will long live in many a supporters memories, mine included.
They are in an obviously sad state of repair and sadly not cost effective to overhaul, the cost of running them electricity wise must of been astronomical as well!
Technology has moved on leaps and bounds in lighting and replacements will be far more cost effective to the club long term and enhance our viewing experience significantly.

Aii not actually as arsed about this as I thought I'd be... Probably because they're in such a shit state. If we had three matching the new one* in the corner of the Steelworks/Popside then maybe we'd feel different.

Shame they have to go, and will be a big loss to the overall feel of the ground and moreso the barrow sky line itself, but as said above just delaying the inevitable.

*Wonder what will happen with that new one, wasn't it part-paid for/funded by one of the phone companies in order to feature a phone mast or signal booster or some sort?

The three remaining original pylons have been serving the club well for over 50 years - half of the total time that we've been at Holker Street - and whilst they were state of the art in 1963 they are now amongst the last of their type still fulfilling their original purpose.

Installed at a cost of around £12,000, much of the work - digging the foundations, cable runs, making good the terracing, etc. - was done by Wilf Livingstone's band of volunteers, saving the club around a further £2,500 in labour costs. Shades of the present Ground Maintenance team, perhaps?

In the days before satnavs, floodlight pylons were an important navigation tool in finding the football ground in an unfamiliar town.

Whilst it will be sad that these iconic pylons will no longer grace the Barrovian skyline - which itself is very different now from what it was half a century ago - it's time to move on and install new, improved, floodlights.

And who knows, in another half century or so, future generations of supporters may be bemoaning the demolition of the 2016 floodlight poles.

This suggests that it is indeed a phone mast

The one good floodlight tower was built for "Orange" mobile phones at a cost including all the control gear and massive foundations for circa £250.000., it could be left in situ to continue to act as a mobile mast as the new single pole mast in that area will possibly be nearer the pitch.
