That sounds like a load of [SwearFilter] to be fair.
Not so sure. Rooney was getting very wound up in the 15 mins or so prior to the incident, flung an arm out at an opponent which went unseen, berated the referee over a free kick given to Torquay. He also did instantly scream at the referee twice immediately upon the penalty being awarded, although I obviously don't know what he said and I doubt the Torquay fan does either. He can also be seen on the highlights doing this. I'm of the opinion that it probably was something he said that got him the red rather than the supposed handball.

That being said, it shouldn't take away from the fact that the officials (not just the referee) were absolutely appalling and got the most basic of decisions badly wrong repeatedly.

The officials may not always be right, but they are always the officials! ;)

If Rooney's straight red was definitely wrong can we appeal it or does he get a 3 match automatic ban if we can't or don't appeal?
If this from the Torquay fans forum is correct I don't think Barrow will be appealing:

I dont think he was sent off for the alleged handball. He was sent off after he told the referee he was a "[email protected]" at the top of his voice looking straight at him. The ref only seemed to reach for a card after that.

They can barely speak English down that area or speak it. Weird people.
Wouldnt believe that.

I've just watched the highlights and have to agree that it looks as though Rooney talked himself into a red card. If that's the case it is very unprofessional and he has let the team down.

The officials certainly left plenty to be frustrated about yesterday. But If the Rooney red card was for dissent then that is inexcusable though!

A fine out of his wages and some friendly advice from Mr Evatt should do the trick. Let the side down yesterday if the details are correct.

We all thought it was for the tackle after the alleged handball but it was for abuse to the referee, although the officials were not the best you can see it was plainly Rooney gesticulating to the referee and saying something, I think it would be a waste of money to appeal unfortunately.

An appeal has been confirmed by the club - it appears the red card was given for the handball. If so, we should have a successful case for the suspension to be rescinded.

I hope that's the case but it didn't look like it on the highlights.

If that’s the case the handball was clearly unintentional, hopefully we got the officials account of things and the appeal isn’t futile.

Just watched the highlights , yes looks a harsh penalty but he’s been sent off for what he’s said to the ref.

All depends what's in the referees report. Doesn't matter what people think..its his report which will state reason for straight red!

Looks like a fairly clear handball and then he said quite a lot to the ref, so one way or another I can't see the appeal being successful.
