Goalkeepers past and present

Am a big fan of our current keeper Danny,though he has come in for a bit of criticism this season.Was having a good disscusion with some fellow supporters recently who they regard as our best keepers, post league days.Think my top three would be,3=Peter McDonald, 2=Jeff Wealands and No1=Steve Farrally.Anyone have any others they rated ?Whats your best 3 ?

Peter mcdonald must have been before my time,

I thought Peter McDonnell was good though

You knew who I meant,but lets be honest some people are sad and get off on trying to be CLEVER all the time,shame they dont look as smart though,wouldnt you agree on that ?

Usually Poacher i wouldnt mention anyones spelling or grammer as mine is terrible. But i made exception as it was you and i dont like you.

I have been getting more and more unsure about Hurst. He just doesn't seem to inspire confidence. I honestly thought Drench was a better option when we had him pre-season.
Bish is still the best in my opinion. There surely hasn't been a better shot-stopper. Even if you didn't like his personality you can't deny his skills.

Bish=God.

Hurst as good as hes been has been dodgy at best this season.

As the post asks for best keepers in the post-League days there is only one for number one - - - Harry Thomson, our keeper during our last season in the FL in 71-72 and who stayed with us for three or four months in the first season in the NPL before being sacked. Amazing goalkeeper. It's an irony that such a quality keeper should have been in nets as we slipped out of the FL but I do remember that, our demotion notwithstanding, he was chosen for the Division 4 all-star eleven that season. Anyone who watched him week in week out would not have been surprised - - - despite our woes I cannot recall one mistake from him.

Most people would say Fred Else was our greatest keeper EVER and I would not particularly care to argue against that but I do feel Thomson was very much in the frame for that debate too, let alone just restricting the choice to our non-League days.

Farrelly, McDonnell and Alan Martin all rate very highly and very closely. I also liked Bish but can't quite put him ahead of those three. Kevin Thomas was particularly good in his first season with us. Also worthy of a mention would be Stuart Taylor and Lionel Duffin, two local lads who were both excellent keepers during some bad times for the club in the early and mid Seventies. Duffin first played for us in the League around about 1965 as a young lad and returned to play in the NPL till around about 1977. Duffin was our keeper in a famous match on 27-12-65 when he got stretchered off and Bobby Knox came on and saved a penalty from Alick Jeffrey of Doncaster Rovers at the Steelworks (Crossbar) End- - - - the first substitute keeper ever to save a penalty. Stuart Taylor made the greatest save I have ever seen in my life (at Barrow or in any match ever on TV) in a match against Buxton in 1973 at Holker Street. Better than Banks 1970, better than Jim Montgomery, FA Cup Final 1973. Fact!

Football league days - Fred Else. Non league - Farrelly (only conceded about 25 goals over the whole season).

Can't believe people are actually mentioning Bish with any seriousness in this thread. I liked him generally, but to put him ahead of Farrelly and McDonnell is laughable. Decent shot stopper but thats all he was.

Farrelly for me is comfortably the best keeper I've seen play for Barrow, he had absolutely everything that makes a top goalkeeper.

Peter McDonnell for me. Someone mentioned Stuart Taylor, i remember puttinq a couple past him for Swarthmoor, when he was playing for British Legion towards the end of his career.
