Barrow bow out of Lancashire Trophy

It’s another less cup to be distracted by as, watched by 440 hardy souls, Barrow bowed meekly out of the Lancashire Trophy. Two goals down after 16 minutes, Barrow scarcely celebrated a reply five minutes before the break and rarely looked like getting back into the game.

Barrow were defensively at sixes and sevens in the first 20 minutes as Chorley quickly gained the advantage. In the 12th minute, our failure to clear an attack saw the ball fall to Jack Lynch who struck past Taylor from a central position. Four minutes later. a Chris Simm shot was deflected wide for a corner from which Dale Whitham scored.

We rallied to some degree. In the 21st minute, Ted Cribley slid the ball across to Anthony Wilson in the penalty area, who blasted wide. On the half hour, a good long ball from Johnny Gorman was placed wide by Cribley. Seven minutes late, Gorman shot past the post from a Dan Pilkington free kick. Barrow’s one true moment of inspiration came in the 40th minute when a great long ball (from Pilkington?) reached Wilson deep inside the area, giving Grundy no chance for 2-1.

The lack of celebration was symptomatic of a match played like a friendly and the second half was even lower key than the first. Chorley, happy to sit on their one goal lead, invited Barrow pressure but for the most part all we could muster was wayward passing and shooting. Taylor made a good block from Almond in the 56th minute but the first real excitement of this half was the double substitution made by Barrow in the 67th minute, Reid and Cook coming on for Burns and Pilkington. Expectations of a revival were short lived as our lack of purpose led to renewed Chorley attacks. In truth, the visitors played little better- but they had the lead.

In the last five minutes, Barrow turned on the pressure to more effect but it was too little, too late. A long-range Gorman shot grazed the post in the 87th minute; two minutes later another shot from the No.9 was deflected wide for a corner.

At least we can concentrate on the league and hopefully turn in a much improved performance in our home match against strugglers Stalybridge on Saturday.

We lost a game that nobody was interested in, plus points certainly players coming back from injury getting minutes under their belt, no injuries and a goal for wilson.

Onto stalybridge now, 3pts saturday and hopefully fylde are going through their bad patch having lost their last 2 and lose again saturday

Nice friendly little club & five minutes by car away from where you were last night. Think I'd go & watch that myself.

Believe they showed the competition the same interest we did and rested a fair few players. They know where their priority lies, hopefully the cup hangover will cost them a league game or two.

Re - Fylde, three defeats on the bounce (although in different competitions with massively different levels of clubs) hopefully they'll go a goal down early on Saturday & doubts will creep in.
