Goodbye to Barrow's oldest fan.

Post by thegaffer77 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 9:16 am

A sad goodbye to Ted Beach (my grandad) who passed away last weekend. Ted was 97 years old and attended regularly up until last season. Anyone who knows my family knew to find Ted right on the half way line, on the popular side in his trilby and having a pint in the club at half time. Can you imagine the changes he witnessed not only at the football but in life generally. He is now a bluebird soaring high above Holker St. Rest in peace.
Stood behind Ray Wilkie for years. Best education I ever had.

That is an amazing achievement that your grandad continued to stand at matches at such an age. Most of us shuffle off to the stand as the years roll by.
it's because of those like him that have continued supporting the club through all the good and bad times that we still exist and we give our thanks that they did so.
I am sure he will be having a welcoming party up there with all those who have gone before.
R.I.P. Ted Beach.

The age alone is some achievement but still standing on the pop side at 97! amazing.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

I couldn't ever see myself coming to games at that age never mind standing the whole entire time! What a commitment!

RIP Ted

Very sorry to hear of the passing of your grandad. I do wonder if it's the same elderly gentleman I found myself standing next to on one occasion about a year ago and chatting to during one match. As you say, the changes he will have witnessed both in life and at HS will have been a great many. Condolences on your sad loss.

Wonder if he was ever tempted to stand there and sang "Where were you when we were shit" to the entire ground.

RIP Ted.

Condolences to your family - shame the last game he saw (presumably) was the Tranmere collapse!

Was there once a listening project conducted to gather stories from older fans, or am I getting mixed up? Maybe those who have the time and means can do something along these lines so we can retain as much of the club's heritage as possible.

Stood there all them years RIP he's probably seen more barrow games than any of us, that's a lot of years of disappointment. But I bet i wouldn't have swapped it for the world

Hope the club have a moments silence or something
