The tranmere trouble

Post by cromwells ghost » Sat Oct 07, 2017 8:49 am

Read the report of the trouble at last years Tranmere v Barrow match in the Liverpool Echo seems like a set up, how can the Barrow lad who was hit first then knocked out straight away get jailed when the seven from Tranmere escape a jail sentence ?

You read the report? Then you will have read: "The 45-year-old has previously had an international football banning order and has received 25 sentences for a total of 39 offences. As a result of his past, he was jailed for four months and handed a six year football banning order."

Yes, in the past so you think its justice to sentence someone that has been punched first, knocked out then kicked on the floor and not jail the other defendants ? One get let off because it might effect his place in the army ?

I just think the lad has been unlucky, what are the odds on him going back into a boozer halfway through a match and trouble starting ?

Kind of raises an issue in itself. If people are ejected from football matches first instinct is to go to a pub to wait until the game is over. If you get a small area with two sets of fans being sent out then odds are they will meet at the same place.

If your behaviour only warrants being ejected from the ground why should you not be free to go wherever you want after the ejection? Football fans are persecuted enough without suggesting stricter punishments or arbitrary made up on the back of a fag packet rules.

It is possible to go to a pub and not get in a brawl.

If someone goes on to commit a crime after being ejected it should be dealt with, which it has been.

i was in liverpool on that day but unfortunately could not make the game. Was on train station and one of the "fans" came up to me right in my face and squealed "common barrow" very loudly looking for a reaction. I smiled and said i was a fan but could not go to the game...he looked at me confused and walked away....he did not have a clue who i was.Sad guy who i would not want to be associated has a barrow "fan" frankly embarrassing. That was just one individual, i know other fans who go to the game to watch the football...and give superb support.

I caught the later train to Liverpool that day, knowing it would be relatively 'drink' free. I was told that some fans on the earlier ones were already intoxicated as they boarded the train!

Whilst in the Liverpool pubs we didn't see or have any trouble apart from Everton fans asking if we were 'Sunderland'. They then commented favourably on us traveling to support a Non-League side.

Catching the bus from Lime Street to Tranmere, I found myself in the Prenton Arms. It was quite a large establishment - having two sections, one each side of the bar. The side I was in was full of Barrow AFC fans having a good craic together. I bumped into an old school friend I hadn't seen for years who now lives in Manchester. Another friend was celebrating his birthday. Everyone was talking football, having a laugh and taking photos. The mother of a young Barrow player even introduced herself to us - she was from Mansfield. Can' t remember her son's name. She commented on the good atmosphere.

Around 2.10pm I noticed the bar staff becoming agitated and their friendliness started to dissipate. I asked if everything was okay and was told that trouble was brewing in the other section of the pub. I then noticed a few Barrow fans walking into our side of the bar. Shouts and singing could be heard in the other section and I sensed tension mounting in the pub. I noticed a bar maid making a phone call with a worried look on her face. Moments later the police arrived. They walked through our section, into the other side, and I heard them speaking to the fans who were gathered in there.

Shortly after the police left, most started moving out of the pub towards the away fans turnstiles. Everybody was searched by stewards before entering the ground. I noticed a few Barrow fans being refused entrance, the stewards making comments regarding their intoxication.

I read that the affray took place around 3.15pm in the pub - this means the place must have been frequented by those refused admission or those deciding they didn't wish to see the game.

In defence of the lad who received a jail sentence - when sober, he's a nice lad and can be good company. I believe he's had problems in the past related to drink and drugs.

I learnt the hard way years ago- not to drink heavily before games. Now, when traveling, I don't touch alcohol before arriving at the location or stadium. Losing your liberty or being threated with it in a court of law is an unnerving experience.
