LOCAL LADS

Post by thedon1969 » Fri May 04, 2018 4:15 pm

much like the rugby we need to base our side on players from our locality! Alex Newby Elliot Newby both found success since leaving barrow should we look at bringing them back if they would come back ? Anyone else local / localish we should try and target in the close season
Nathan Waterston looks a real talent and is a local lad ! :scarf:

I would certainly be keeping tabs on Elliot Newby who has another season under his belt and picked up the awards at Telford. I would hope the best local lads - performance centre, or local leagues, would get an invite into pre season training, or at any time of the season for that matter. The problem is in the 1st team training location and full time status.
Still searching for the Young Soul Rebels

I'm totally with you with regards to bringing on local talent. However; if the Holker Street crowd (especially if results weren't going our way) were to turn on these lads, it wouldn't be very pleasant to watch/hear.

I remember a local lad called Mike Ballantine (RIP) playing once - maybe a couple of times - for us at Holker Street before calling it a day. He informed me over a drink that the verbal abuse he'd received had been horrific! I'd heard it too - and I was stood on the Popular Side! Having known Mike, it's a wonder he didn't do an 'Eric Cantona' on some of those sat in the main stand! :D

Bobby Knox (another local lad) used to take a fair bit of flack too - but always gave 100%, bless him!

And who'll ever forget Brian Arrowsmith's own goal for Leicester City? I won't!
I was only 8 - I'd never before heard some of the expletives I heard that day!

Mark Hubbold never seemed to get much stick... ;)

Is it just Barrow supporters who have an obsession with playing locals? I’ve never read anything similar on other clubs forums.

I think the idea of having a few locals is a good one. It gives some fans a sense of identity although I'm not too worried as long as the players we have are good enough. It comes back to the idea that locals care more because they are from Barrow. Maybe there's something in that, especially for those fans who grew up with watching Proctor and Skivington etc. We've not had many local lads for ages now so Im not holding my breath.
Stood behind Ray Wilkie for years. Best education I ever had.
