The idea of a "perfect storm" season implies that were it not for those conditions we wouldn't be where we are and this is some "once in a lifetime" offer, which actually suggests that really we are not that good, that chance is at the heart of our success.

Agree,... apart from the chance bit. 48 years is a long time and we've never been close, but its not chance at the heart of it, its having a proper approach to running a football club with belief and a positive mindset and most importantly, everyone pulling together. With all due respect to previous management teams and boards, i am not sure any of them could have got us to this point on or off the pitch.

If the choice were to get promoted and play our next season as a badly damaged financially incapable EFL team or alternatively play in what will probably have to be a reconstructed NL with the same conviction, style and (in the main lets not forget) squad, then reluctantly I'd accept the latter. But it wouldn't destroy my spirit.

I think this Suffolks Blue comment is key. I've supported this team since the earlyish 1960's and it won't stop now. Although I've never lived in Barrow (but my mum & dad were born there) the anticipation of driving up the M6 to see a game never goes away - I'm still that little boy of all those years ago. Like many others I will be sickened if we don't get the nod to go up BUT the financial implications in the EFL will be a worry in the present situation. Having said that I do remember talk way back in 1966 the year before promotion that we were not financial prepared to get promoted to the then Division 3. However, when we did go up in the next season and that did not seem to be an issue - it was the appointment of Norman Bodell that did for us sadly. So if we are offered or do go up under our own steam then we must take the opportunity. But if we find ourselves in the NL I will still be going and supporting whatever team we put out. Sure other teams will get stronger next year but we must try and keep our style of play and hopefully our manager next year.

Its the financial implications of NOT going up that is the worry in the present situation. There is no money in non league football. The board have stated perviously that promotion will help set us on our way towards sustainability. The outlays in costs wont be much different. It is this league that is the brutal financially draining league.

Yes we are a very good team and deserve to be top, however each season in this league is a complete lottery. Fylde were a good side last year and are not so much anymore.
Still baffling that Macclesfield won the league the other year.

Given that we'd have increased sponsorship, prize money and already have more first team players signed on for next season than half the League 2 sides, surely we could only be better off in the EFL???

Perhaps because the present 'golden ticket' that comes with FL membership at present may have to be replaced with a silver or bronze ticket after the pandemic's effects on football have been quantified?

I think Suffolk Blue, and he can shoot me down in flames if I've got this wrong, is alluding to the fact that if the decision to vote us into the league occurs sometime in June or July then recruitment would be extremely difficult as we could only really start recruiting very late in the summer and way behind the other EFL clubs. The chances are that we would have to pay inflated fees etc etc because we will be forever catching up with the rest. I feel a decision needs to be made quickly.

On another issue I have seen proposals like the Maidenhead one put forward. But much will depend whether the Premier League wants to accept more teams into their league. I cannot see them wanting an odd number in their division because if 3 teams are promoted that would make a 21 team league. But I've always liked the idea of no one getting relegated but teams get promoted. That includes all the way down to the likes of Vauxhall Motors who have already won their league! And anyway Bury are being invited back at the lowest level so this type of model could be feasible. But again the Premier League dictates everything - I hope (against all hope) they might be willing to go down this road.

Its the principle of finalising all tables on PPG, whether its top one, two, three or whatever, that would need to be determined.

If we were to go up on the PPG system it could well be a blessing in disguise as I thought we were beginning to falter to be honest. We didn’t look as ruthless without Brad Barry, and in the last three games we won, drew and then lost; and in one or two recent home games we were visibly ‘hanging on’ at the end. Throw Quigley’s 3-game suspension into the mix together with the penalty taker crisis and we might just dodge a bullet. We’ll see. As ever, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
