Ayr played Dungannon Swifts on Wednesday, Glenavon on Thursday then Glentoran on Saturday in July 2001 when we had a relatively rich owner Bill Barr. We spent three nights in a Belfast hotel, sandwiched with a trip to Dublin for the Friday night. One of the best pre seasons ever, still talked about and most fans would love something like that to happen again, either across the water or down South, especially with our recent tie up with Burnley. Unfortunately the nonsense group stage league cup has messed up any chance of a mini tour happening in the near future. The additional costs are probably becoming too onerous for clubs to deal with.

Every club should at least try for one friendly in another part of the UK. Maybe not this year with Covid still a big problem but at least give fans a good excuse for a weekend jolly before the serious stuff. Possibly set up a crowdfund to pay for the player costs.

I seem to remember we played a Scottish team in the early 2000's it only lasted 10 minutes when first one of their players went off injured then a few minutes later in a tackle one of their players suffered a broken leg, their Directors immediately stopped the game and walked out.

It was Stenhousemuir. Only time I have ever seen a friendly stopped.
Following that game, if we played a Football League or Scottish League team ( not that we ever played a Scottish team again) in a friendly we had to have a Football League referee, not a local ref.

"a tackle one of their players suffered a broken leg, "-Correct,due to a tackle from our midfielder Lee Warren I think it was.
The Stenhousemuir manager said at the time,"he would never play an English team again".

Lee Warren is correct.

The song that followed went something like: “He snaps jocks he does, he snaps jocks, Lee Warren, he snaps jocks”

Any reason why this thread is here when it should be in the announcements at the top?

They won't be going to Scotland if they're from Greater Manchester!
