Brilliant article - well written and no doubt echoes the feelings of a lot of the Bradford fans - of which there are many.Hitthebar22 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 9:31 amA proper article about football from a journalist know seems to know what he’s talking about…..compare and contrast to NWEM who often plagiarise their “articles” straight from interviews on the club website.
I thought we were tremendous at Bradford and could have won, but 1-1 was fair. Banks looked like he’d played CB all his life. Kay refreshingly lively - they even put two men on him in the second half. Magnificent support from our fans.

Re: Bradford v Barrow match thread
It was hard to believe that was a league game for us on Saturday; it’s still a novelty at the moment with ex-Premier League clubs featuring on our fixture list. Obviously we are delighted to be in L2, with Bradford dismayed to find themselves in the basement division. That they continue to support their club in such numbers is admirable and they generally seemed a good bunch with no pretensions. However, I thought that monotonous drumming seemed to stifle any co-ordinated vocal support from the rest of the ground; not that they had that much to cheer about I suppose (just compare their goal to ours). Impressive as the Valley Parade experience was, there seemed to be more booing than anything else; compare that to fairly recent games at Holker Street where all four sides of our place were rocking with ‘Barrow, Barrow’ to create a cauldron-like atmosphere. Give me that over the soul-less, robotic monotony of human drum machines which seemed to beat the home crowd into dumb submission.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 7:05 pm Has to be one of the best ever away days. Great ground, great atmosphere and great result. A few beers pre match in Bradford, still can’t believe we were playing against, infact as good as Bradford city, a fantastic, real big football club.
We will foller the soccer, over land and sea...

Rare that you see such a well balanced objective article written by a local rag.. Fully represented from my perspective both the atmosphere and content of the match and how I should be really viewing the game from a home perspective.
Re: Bradford v Barrow match thread
Nice read but he forgot to mention that once again we had to name two keepers to fill our bench!
Didn’t need some pictures of smashed drums and kids crying into their maroon and amber scarves to get the point over either.

Smashed drums? Really? That made my heart and spirit soar. Great.

Really enjoyed the game and our visit to Bradford. Stewards were fine. Their fans were fine. Our fans were fine. Kept looking round the stadium, barely believing that we were actually playing an ex Premier League club in such splendid surroundings! Certainly beats our past visits to Chorley, Marine, Frickley, etc etc.Wintergreen wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 9:54 amIt was hard to believe that was a league game for us on Saturday; it’s still a novelty at the moment with ex-Premier League clubs featuring on our fixture list. I enjoyed hearing the sound of the drum being beaten during the game. I thought it added atmosphere rather then detracting from it.
Heard a group of young lads on the train home saying they are planning to bring a Big Drum to our next home game on Friday and all future home games this season. Bring It On, lads!

Back in the mid-1960's the considerable throng of BBB's (Barrow Boot Boys) gathered behind the Holker Street goal had the surreal habit of trying to imitate the late American Easy Listening star, Jim Reeves, with their tuneful rendition of "Distant Drums". Strangely, some of the lyrics were altered, most notably with reference to a fragrance emanating from the away supporters. It definitely wasn't easy listening and some, like Holkerbird, might be hoping that any drums appearing at HS will be as distant as possible. Some might think they make a smashing sound and, as already alluded, Holkerbird and others will hope they do make a smashing sound . . . and the earlier the better so that drumanti's can RIP for the remainder of the match. Me? Drums don't really bother me but preferably at a reasonable distance so that I'm not left hoping for cochlear implants in my Christmas stocking.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 4:15 pm Heard a group of young lads on the train home saying they are planning to bring a Big Drum to our next home game on Friday and all future home games this season. I wouldn't mind a drum if it could be played properly but unfortunately they seem to always be in the hands of some 14 year old who equates to a child in the nursery beating a biscuit tin with a stick. Monotonous and mind numbing.pjdaly wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 6:57 pmBack in the mid-1960's the considerable throng of BBB's (Barrow Boot Boys) gathered behind the Holker Street goal had the surreal habit of trying to imitate the late American Easy Listening star, Jim Reeves, with their tuneful rendition of "Distant Drums". The one lad who could play was a few seasons ago when we played Aldershot, had a snare drum and was probably army or ex-army. Now that was drumming.
Anyone know when these drums started appearing at games in this country?
Re: Bradford v Barrow match thread
At Bradford the drums were as faraway as physicallly possible inside the ground but another 50 yards would have been better. Any drums at Barrow should be played standing on the Railway lines
Just say no to VAR

Drums are a pain in the backside if not used/played properly and as pointed out above, most are not.
Nothing new though, I remember one lad bringing a drum into the Holker End in the late sixties. As he had a vague idea of how to use it, it was not 'monotonous and mind numbing' though maybe I held a different viewpoint then. In the end, am sure that it was 'confiscated' by the boys in blue though may be mistaken on that.

Was that the one that someone put their foot through? Not me I might add but would be tempted to now.Cubbins Paratrooper wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 9:34 am Drums are a pain in the backside if not used/played properly and as pointed out above, most are not.

We did pinch the one at Crawley a good few years ago but handed it back when asked.

"The 15.05 Barrow to Millom train will shortly be departing from platform 1"
I know a lot of trains get cancelled, whether it's because of leaves on the line or drivers not bothering to turn up or whatever.
Holkerbird might well be singing "please, please, please, for once in my life let me get what I want . . . don't cancel this one . . ."
