Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows what league Barrow played in during the 1892-1893 season or was it only friendlies that they played?

They are just called "Barrow" and no, it is not related to the current club in any way. There is no other information given on the "old" club in the book.

Interesting stuff. Might be worth a visit to the archives in the library. Get the story behind this first Barrow club.

Also read somewhere that the [SwearFilter] Kerr Ladies once played at HS (1920’s) against a Barrow ladies team to raise funds for the YMCA in front of 18000+ Wouldn’t mind reading up on that one too as that would be the record attendance at HS and rewrite the books?

This answers a family history question as I wondered how my great-grandad's eldest brother, who died on 7th December 1892, could have supported the club nine years before it was formed!

Benjamin Walmsley, a Bessemer Manager at the iron and steelworks, passing away aged 33 from T.B., was paid the following tribute:-

"A staunch supporter of the Barrow F.C. His familiar figure will be missed. May the sod rest lightly on the form of poor Ben who has been cut off in the prime of life"

Lots of towns/cities had clubs that were formed and swiftly folded without putting a jot in the history books. Burton Swifts is a good example. They were in around the same time (1892) but folded within a couple of years. Burton Albion wasn't formed until 1950(ish), and has no connections with the former club. The same can be said for Derby Junction, and there were two Middlesbrough sides too.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned thus far (apologies if I've missed it), is that Liverpool FC was formed on 3rd June 1892 - this would have made this Barrow team one of the Reds' first opposition since formation.

I was also able to find the original newspaper report from the Liverpool Mercury, published on Friday, 9th September. The game would have been played the day before.

Amber and black is Barrow’s new colour. They meet the new Liverpool team on the old Everton ground on Thursday next. Fenton, Steel, Saddington, Glen, Conway, Peacock, and Kenyon are amongst the eleven to do duty for the Furnessians.

Of course there is. People who hail from the area known as Furness are Furnessians. You might not hear it as much but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

If you do an internet search a Furnessian is an undergraduate at one of the Lancaster University's colleges, not someone who was born in Furness, an area which in addition to Barrow, also covers Dalton, Askam, Newton etc.

Barrow-in-Furness is in the County Palatine of Lancashire.

Cumbria is NOT a county - it is an administrative unit which is due to change again in the not too distant future.

I was born in Barrow and I am a Lancastrian.
