Going for Goal . . . from far, far away

What great skill and vision from Foley near the end yesterday in almost scoring a quite sensational goal. Unfortunately, "almost" is as far as it got. When we think of long-range goals from near the halfway line it always bugs me how the TV never fails to show one scored by Beckham years ago. Of course I'm not saying it was bad by any means, but as long-range efforts go it was tame . . . he had plenty of space around him and plenty of time to look up and see where the keeper was, and, to top it all, the ball was sitting up nicely on the turf. Grossly over-rated! The best long-range goal I can recall from a Barrow player came from Jason Walker. It would have been 12 or 13 years ago, against Forest Green I think. Walker was near to the touchline, almost under the roof of the stand, and he hooked it as a volley from a side-on stance. It was estimated at 45 yards at the time but it wasn't just about the distance, it was about the acute angle, the fact that the ball was taken in the air and the vision demonstrated as he wasn't looking straight on at the keeper, more a sort of sideways perception of his whereabouts. It was utterly fantastic, a far superior effort to the one scored by Beckham.

What about Hannah's goal at Aldershot with the last kick of the game. A free kick from miles away to get us a point. It would qualify for goal of the season.

I think we're getting the wires crossed, Steve. There was another long-range goal from Walker against Eastleigh where it skidded into the Holker Street net on a very wet surface and, yes, we were lucky to win that one. But the one I referenced was a different one, a long hooked effort into the goals at the Steelworks End, against Forest Green I think, and a 3-1 win I also tend to think. The one against Eastleigh was aided very much by the wet surface and, whilst a good, opportunistic effort, was not nearly as impressive as the one I'm referring to!

I was fortunate to have been at HS the day Jason scored that goal against Forest Green. It was a superb effort and he meant it, it wasn't one of those cross-cum-shot jobbies, he really meant it.
I was thinking back to our last time in the league and can't recall anything like it. Only Ron McGarry might have had the arrogance to even contemplate it but, of course, the ball was completely different: leather, heavy and probably wet.

Andy Green (Best Barrow Striker Ever) scored a goal from by the little first aid area on the popular side. Think I recall Owen Brown attributing it to someone in an Andy Green mask as it was so out of character. Against Accy maybe?

Remember going to Bury at start of 1967 season. Bury,s keeper hit the ball upfield and Jimmy Mallon hit it straight back from around the half way line. Their keeper back peddled and manage to get a hand to it. It hit the bar, came back hit him and went in. We won 2-1 I think. Great start to the season.

I thought it was Andy Cook v FGR, back to goal turned and hit it from about 45 yards and when he scored it he just nonchalantly raised his arm. Walker scored a grass cutter in the cup in biblical rain. Cant remember who it was against….

Walker goal was against Eastleigh FA cup or Fa trophy!, I'm sure the goal Paul is talking about was against Mansfield in the National league when everyone ( and their manager) said were both the goals he scored were goals of the season!

Yes it was against Forest Green. One of the best goals I have seen.
