End Of Year Trivia: Annoying Tannoying at H.S.
End Of Year Trivia: Annoying Tannoying at H.S.
This one is aimed at the more senior supporters as a bit of end-of-year trivia . . .
I accidentally (no, honestly, it was definitely accidentally) heard a bit of music yesterday and I thought it was a piece that used to be regularly played over the tannoy at Holker Street back in 1962 when I first attended. Back in those days I seem to recall that the same two or three records were played every home match and they were all brass band pieces. I didn't know the names of them but I think this one I heard yesterday was one of them – unless my memory is playing tricks and I know it from somewhere else. As I say, it was the same two or three brass band pieces every time for what felt like a few years. I don't think anything contemporary was played back in 1962/63, and by "contemporary" I would have meant the likes of Adam Faith or Helen Shapiro. Is it any wonder Barrow were so poor back in the early 1960's if this was their "inspiration" as they ran out onto the Holker Street pitch?
I can't say I like the piece below (well, it ain't Dua Lipa or Lizzo, is it???) but one thing it does stir is a bit of nostalgia. I have learned that it is called "Blaze Away" by Abe Holzmann and maybe supporters who are even older than me (if that's possible) can confirm whether I've got it right or not when I say it was a regular on the turntable at Holker Street back in the early 60's. Maybe someone can also name the one or two other brass band pieces that were the staples over the tannoy back then?

Fortunately, we are more fashionable, up-to-date and cool now as 2022 draws to a close. Now we have the likes of "Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five. Oh, hang on a moment . . . . up-to-date??? The DC5? Don't they go back as far as Abe Holzmann?

Since you ask, PJ....!
There was a lot of brass band type music played in the late 50s. I think much of it was Souza marches. There were also some 'pop' songs of the time. One I remember was 'Mexicali Rose' and there was one with lyrics about "rolling along with the rumbling tumbling tumbleweed" (possibly a statement about the condition of the ground). I do remember that the team came out onto the pitch to "Entry of the Gladiators"!
As far as I recall they didn't use any of the really popular 'rock n Roll' music of the time, such as Bill haley, Elxis, Buddy Holly, etc.

Oh this is great !! Nostalgia ain't what it used to be !
But we did have an appreciable amount of Brass Band music played over the tannoy as well as the occasional " live " brass Band who would march up and down the pitch at half time. But the titles of the pieces played have always been a mystery to me.
But as far as " contemporary" music, I have clear memories of early season 62 / 63 when over the tannoy came the distinctive "Telstar" by The Tornados, and in 1963 " Da Do Ron Ron" by The Crystals crackled its way over the Holker Street airwaves. There must have been others which have been lost in the deepest recesses of my memory.

Cheers for the rabbit hole gents. Rediscovered my dislike of Brass Band music there!
Telstar would be OK.
Back to 'Eton Rifles' or 'The Boys are Back in Town' would do me, sure we came out to them.
Don't mind the walk out stuff now that Believer thing has gone.

Not sure it was that era but the PA announcer that did it for a lot of years was Jack Athersmith who I think worked for Rediffusion - now that IS going back!

And if you got back from Holker Street by 5.00pm you could catch Sports Report on the Light Programme with more brass band music!
Also a good place to catch the away result with no local radio then! Gawd - I'm making myself feel old!

My eyes are not good, so I had to read your question closely
Re: End Of Year Trivia: Annoying Tannoying at H.S.
Blaze Away was the music to the ABC Minors song at the other end of Holker Street in the '60's.

Definitely the Radetsky March and, oh yes, Telstar. I have a feeling Duane Eddy featured quite a bit. 'Shazam', maybe?:

Yes, Sousa marches were very prominent over the speakers in the late 1960s, especially the Washington Post and Blaze Away, the latter- as has been pointed out- also being the melody for the ABC Minors song. I also remember "Wheels Cha Cha" by Joe Loss being another regular.
Re: End Of Year Trivia: Annoying Tannoying at H.S.
Oh, sorry to digress slightly, but Wheels Cha Cha brings back memories! Learning to dance in the ballroom of the Vic hotel. I think it was the Ida McDonald School of Dancing!
