Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Important that we do not feel sorry for ourselves as Gillingham will certainly be on a high going into Saturdays fixture.

Not the result we all wanted would have took a replay before the game don`t agree a draw would be a bad result all about getting into next round, pick ourselves up and go again we have a decent squad just feel for the BOD who have put in 10s of thousands of pounds would have been nice to get a decent draw for them but not to be, lets go again v Gillingham.

Ignore him, he’s a pain in the arse!
We're all supporters on here. Let's leave the negative comments to the away fans
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
According to the BBC match statistics we had more possession, more shots and more shots on target

Ok we haven,t won today, but the league is the important thing. The money would have been nice, but Hey Ho.As long as the the players forget about this game and play the way we know they can against Gillingham I don,t think anyone will be complaining come next Saturday. It was a blip will soon be forgotten if normal service is resumed.Well done to all the supporters who travelled their,a great effort.Hope you all got home safely as the weather tonight was horrendous as I travelled back from Blackpool which took me.three and a half hours.
Onwards and Upwards.

I dont think we are really disagreeing Jonty. Box-to-box we did dominate. But you dont win matches like these by simply dominating play. Maidstone didn't out play us. But they did out-think us. They shut down space in areas where they knew we would be superior. The only shots we were ever going to get away were ones from outside the box. And if there is one thing that everybody knows about us is that in open play we do not shoot much from range.
Maidstone did a very good tactical job on us. The most impressive aspect by far of Maidstones performance today was Elakobi's game plan. One thing about PW is that he consciously tries to understand and out think his opponents. Today he had the tables turned on him. He will be spitting feathers at this probably as much as the actual loss.

So why does he not do the same and get them to shoot from distance instead of walming it in or passing back its not rocket science it can take defection ad still go inits happend to us against who aren't scared of having a shot from anywhere.practice it in training,it may work, but if you dont try you will never know, and get farman to release the ball earlier instead of ballydancing.

You mean move away from the way we have been playing all season and has got us to 3rd in the league???Iain40 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 11:01 pm So why does he not do the same and get them to shoot from distance instead of walming it in or passing back its not rocket science it can take defection ad still go inits happend to us against who aren't scared of having a shot from anywhere.practice it in training,it may work, but if you dont try you will never know, and get farman to release the ball earlier instead of ballydancing.

I do apologise about this, but I’ve said from early doors, our strike force is shite, if it wasn’t for Farman, Ray, Canavan and Chester, we would be bottom 5, Fact.

Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Pretty much agree with Suffolk Blue's account other than I didn't think Maidstone were any better than I expected. However, we were a lot worse than I expected! IMO it was a poor match between 2 poor teams on the day.
Our tactics in the first half seemed to consist of passing the ball around in defence sideways and then back to Farman who tried to hit it as high and long as possible towards Acquah who when it was close won quite a lot but without creating anything from it.
We are a counter attacking team and we normally play teams in our league who attack us and leave gaps. Maidstone let us attack most of the time and then counter attacked. They defended well and won almost every 50/50 challenge but luckily for us they struggled to put more than a couple of passes together when going forward. Sadly for us, the one time in the match they managed a coherent with good play gave them the equalising goal after they had gifted us the lead. The winner was a 1 in 100 unstoppable shot and other than that they created nothing in the second half.
For most of the game Chester, Ray and Canavan strolled through without any pressure on them but I agree with Desmond to a certain extent that our forwards are vastly inferior to our defence and midfield. We have the best defence in the league and a very decent midfield lacking only a player with a defence splitting pass but our attack is not great. Only Newby has the ability to dribble past a defender and he had his poorest match today for a long time. Tiensia is the other player who has this ability plus being a lot quicker and stronger than Newby and when he is fit if we have him as left wingback and Newby as right wingback we will be a lot more dangerous.
Luckily, my son and I only had to travel from Portsmouth and back but I felt sorry for the people travelling from Barrow as it was a pretty poor display. A bad season for the 2 teams I follow - Barrow and Portsmouth - both doing really well in the league but both beaten in the FA Cup by teams 2 divisions below them!
Obviously, the league is far more important than the cup but what a wonderful chance of a huge financial boost for the club thrown away!

Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
You're not seriously suggesting this is as big a cup upset as Hereford v Newcastle are you?
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Sorry, I should have put a smiley to indicate that this was tongue in cheek, referring to the fact that older Barrow fans have been annoyed for years by endless BBC repeats of the Radford goal for Hereford, a goal which arguably contributed to Hereford taking our place in the league. Of course, I don’t expect the Maidstone goal to be shown that often.

For sure. It's due to having the league's best defence that we're 3rd. Lacking a goal-scoring striker - Garner and Proctor have 1 goal each after 20 league games. Not good enough. Ray has 3 and Canavan 2. Say no more.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 11:52 pm I do apologise about this, but I’ve said from early doors, our strike force is shite, if it wasn’t for Farman, Ray, Canavan and Chester, we would be bottom 5, Fact.

Bus broke down Knutsford
Back on replacement after 90 minutes
On to some God forsaken southern tunnel to wait there for similar
Arrive ground 2.30 and after one or two hiccups all get in.
The drum was still there, and the 40 virgins had brought all their mates, but to be fair they created a fair racket. It's hands down the best support in that county
Then we got ahead and settled back to enjoy the afternoon.
Didn't turn out like that. We were way too passive in our passing and movement of when we had the ball, which was a lot. They battled away them cometh the wonder strike. Cue delirium and Resolute defending
Well done to them
Left at 5pm
Got to the A590
Bus home slowly warmed up. No time for introspection and by the midlands it was Feliz Navidad and Whigfield
Got to 590, sheesh!
Up Lindal Hill to the jukebox 'Running up that Hlill' and cheers to an excellent and committed. driver and Sean Mets running bus
Got to Ulverston passing various abandoned vehicles including police
ODragged a large bag halfway home ankle deep in slush
In house about 22 hours after we'd left it...
Mrs BA picked a cracking away to attend.
That's football. No need for a refund. Spent the very long day with some lovely people. On we go
