Tend to agree with Des on this one. It seems to have been a choice between Chester and Ray. That implies that PW is pretty confident that Chester will sign a new contract first off.

I do think that it is primarily to do with the pace v experience debate but there were times last season when Ray was MOTM and more than once. Wild got him playing some really good football.

We know now that Wild is both a deep thinker and also appreciates loyalty and as far as I can see Ray has given him loyalty. My instinct therefore suggests that this decision has been influenced by events towards the back end of the season where he saw the defence without Chester, Ray and Canavan for short periods.

Love to know the precise reasoning but maybe we never will. There will be a carefully crafted reason somewhere. PW doesn’t make decisions on the toss of a coin.

Mate we have Canavan and hoping to keep Chester. If we are playing 3 at the back of course we need pace. Teams got a lot of joy playing through us and we need to be quick on the turn and have someone quick to cover.

Wild has already said we need to add 'athleticism' next season.. I wonder what one of these attributes is? Pace maybe?

Ray had pace??

You don't have a clue mate if anyone
I actually do have a clue Mr Johnson, and in my opinion Ray was one of the best defensive players in league 2 last season, he has all the attributes to do well at this level, personally Chester should have been released,he lacked pace, isn’t the tallest for a centre back, and dallied on the ball and was dispossessed far to many times recently. But in PW I trust.
I am not saying Ray should have been released - I'm saying now that he has been, I can almost guarantee they will sign a younger centre half (possibly even on loan) who is quicker.

If you ask Chester and Ray they type of player they would like beside them, I bet someone with pace who is quick on the turn is what they would want 100%

Ray isn't quick mate. Not saying he's a carthorse but there are much quicker centre halves out there

think Ray went because Pete wants to play out from the back , both Canavan and Ray often give the ball away cheaply, yeah Chester has been caught twice if I remember , but his passing, the way he reads a game far outweigh the odd mistake , he`s made some crucial blocks etc. this season so I suppose Pete wrote down the pro`s and con`s for both players and one had to go !, to be fair I think Ray is as good as Canavan !

If PW wants to play out from the back that will be a totally new game plan for PW sides. We will get caught in possession by high press teams and ultimately get spanked. No thanks.

Like I suggested earlier I think PW is dispensing with the back 3 and going 442 with two orthodox full backs and 2 wingers. It's how he set up at Halifax and did so here early in his tenure.

He didn’t play 4-4-2 at the start here

He played 4-2-3-1

The opening game v Stockport last season:

Farman
McClelland Ray Canavan Warren
Neal Foley
Waters Gotts Whitfield
Gordon

If McClelland's time in Scotland hasn't gone well I wonder if he's on the radar this summer?

Just aided Dundee Utd on loan to win the Scottish Championship so can rule that out.

If any manager, wants their team to play out from the back, at this level, I would sack them Now! Players in the premiership struggle at times,so league 2 , no thank You!

Playing out from the back. If you want to start an argument between supporters this is the topic to choose.I don’t know who ordained that football should be played that way but it seems to have become mainstream.

The problem with PW advocating it, is simply that we are not a possession based team. We are generally happy letting teams have the ball so when we do get it, and then play keep ball, we tend to play sideways.

We also have a problem in transition hence PW’s renewed focus on pace in defence and midfield. If you can’t move the ball quickly while trying to keep it then you inevitably make mistakes and it does not look good.

Tend to agree with the above. Fine tweaks are required in the way we do things on the pitch not fundamental changes in the way we play the game.

Paddy Madden, Miles Hypolite and Ryan Croadsdale all released by Stockport. Croadsdale is perhaps the most interesting one?
