Re: Not good enough
Sorry - a SD?
FWIW I may be old fashioned but what little success this club has had, has come from having a manager - no director of football - a manager, who picks his own players and doesn’t have them picked by someone who’s not going to work with them.
I know it’s the way that football seems to be now. I’m not a big fan of Iain Wood but when I think about it, it’s probably the system that’s put him there that I don’t like.
A director of football also cost the club a lot of money that they don’t need to spend. It may be old-fashioned but it worked..

Re: Not good enough
Sporting Director, I'm guessing. That's Iain Woods' official title (or was until he became, er, CEO).
Don't let the old man in.

Actually I think its DOF!
Re: Not good enough
It worked with Evatt not by design but because we landed rather fortuitously after 48 years with a Manager who ripped up the expectations when it came to Barrow and managed to turn an unfancied club to an outfit that had people talking. Rather quickly at that. Up to that point we had been treading water for years as football club not really getting anywhere in the Conference / National leagues, albeit some good cup and Trophy success which was deemed the best we could realistically do. Make no mistake we got lucky when we landed Evatt and it worked well for all concerned and his footballing vision had set a bar.
That’s where the SD (also now the CEO) comes in and (so far as I am aware when listening to the Board talking football- they want to see a fast attacking good brand of football) and the SD has been tasked with the job of going out and finding, not the next Evatt, but some one who can subscribe to and share this vision and also has fans believing that we can actually do something. I believe that Evatt has set the Blue print and benchmark for the footballing side of the club and we’ve been trying to get back to a brand of football thats spoken about as enthusiastically since then.
If you go down the traditional Manager route, each will have their own styles, their own vision, the football may go from long ball hoof with one manager to trying to keep possession with the next and everything else in between. Yes it may work with short term success but there will never be an opportunity to develop a footballing identity for the club. We all want people to say - yes Barrow, they play a good brand of exciting football. It may take 3 stabs at a coach and a massive churn of players but you have to stick to the footballing vision that you set at board level and task a SD to deliver it.

Re: Not good enough
I take your point Jonty but if that’s the case this model at the moment is working no better than a manager being in sole charge. So who takes the blame for that?
The DOF who chose the manager or the manager who is unable to achieve what he’s being asked to do by the DOF?

Re: Not good enough
We need to get a team to be solid in league 2 ,the style of attacking football rarely works in this league, all the top teams aren't great to watch ,Stockport spent a fortune but even they were physical regimented and really solid!
The board need to look at what we can realistically do in this league, we have to get a team that might not be pretty to watch but for a few years we have to become established instead of chasing this holy grail of total football.
If they want clemence to achieve this ( attacking football) then he won't do it with this group of player's, we need to rethink what we want stability or getting relegated chasing an impossible dream!

Re: Not good enough
That’s the big question but I don’t think blame is the word. It may take one attempt or three or four go’s to get it right. It might never work out. However if the board have a clear vision for the football and they believe in that and they have entrusted the SD to deliver that then ultimately the coach pays the price. Thats football.bluessupporter wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2025 9:25 pm I take your point Jonty but if that’s the case this model at the moment is working no better than a manager being in sole charge. This is the counter argument that also needs to be considered. Re: Not good enough
I mean that's lovely and everything. But we might be in the NPL before we find someone who can achieve that.Jonty wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2025 9:12 pm That’s where the SD (also now the CEO) comes in and (so far as I am aware when listening to the Board talking football- they want to see a fast attacking good brand of football) and the SD has been tasked with the job of going out and finding, not the next Evatt, but some one who can subscribe to and share this vision and also has fans believing that we can actually do something.
Anyway, did they really appoint Wood for those reasons? It always seemed to me that after the Dunn, Jolley and Cooper experiences the Board realised they were utterly hopeless at recruiting managers so got Wood in to do it for them. (And presumably to also take on all the contract negotiations etc which I presume were previously a drain on their time.)
