Where Do You Come From Thread

Post by tommy2thumbs » Tue Mar 04, 2025 8:46 am

Idea "borrowed" off @olbarrafancumbak on the Carlisle thread

I'll start, Tommy Hamilton, currently Morecambe, LA4 (actually a 30 minute walk from the Montezuma Prawn Shed)

EDIT
Born in Barrow (Westway) in 1954
Attended Abbotsmead Juniors then BBGS

Incidently, while at juniors, the games teacher said that you could only play for the school if you could kick a ball with both feet.... ah well

Remember watching Barrow Boys when at Juniors, and thinking that the ground was massive.

Moved around a bit, presently on missionary work in Morecambe

Go......

Dalton and I’ve lived there the entirety of my 26 year old life. Been watching Barrow since I was around 12/13.

Dalton, been following the Bluebirds on and off since a few games before the Wolves FA Cup tie :scarf:

Edited based on later comments: Really old fogey, born in Dalton 1946. I recollect queuing up for tickets for the Wolves game at a little window at the Holker Street end of the old wooden stand 😳

Born and bred Barrovian, a regular follower since 1962, through good times and bad (unfortunately more the latter!).

But where do I come from? That's a very deep philosophical question and I do wonder where we, as a species, originated. How did we get to end up on this planet and, perhaps more importantly, why? Increasingly as the years go by and I look around me at the things that go on in this world – not just right now but throughout all of our known, recorded history (provided that recorded history is true of course) – I ask myself how did I come to end up here? After all, it's an asylum, and an asylum where lunatics are definitely in charge and pulling the strings. Do I not have any free-will? Did I have no say in finding myself born in little old Barrow-in-Furness (which, for all its faults, still offers Shipbuilders Tea and is still preferable to many places in this troubled world)?

Philosophical rant over. But, Tommy, you did ask the question . . . . .

I have travelled to most home and away games from Richmond in North Yorkshire since promotion in honour of my dad who always wanted us to get back into the football league but never lived to see it.
Not so much this season due to cost of living . Happy to say I gave up a Man united season ticket to follow the Bluebirds.

As an Ulverston lad my first ever game was a cup tie against Goole in the late 60,s or early 70,s. Maybe someone could tell me when that was ?

I was born in Barrow in1954 and from about the age of about six have followed Barrow AFC through all their ups and downs. One of my oldest memories was going by train with my dad in the 1960s on a football special to watch us play Buxton in the FA Cup and then again to watch us play Blackburn Rovers at their old ground.
One that really stands out apart from the 1990 FA Trophy final with Bobby Moore presenting the trophy was our FA
cup match against Southampton in 1967 with the ground packed to the rafters.I could be wrong but I think there was 16,000 in the ground with me squashed against one of the perimeter walls.I think we drew 2-2 ,but lost the replay at Southampton 3-0.
Barrow has all sorts of problems over the years, but we are stiil there punching well above our weight.Whatever you say about our club we are survivors.Hats off to our owners over the years who have worked miracles on a relatively tiny budget compared to other clubs. We will survive but we always do it the hard way.

Matt, Barrow, first game I really remember was 1990 fa trophy, went down on a rickety old bus, the driver sucked on a cigar which blew behind into us, reminded me of the lovely smell of Earnies Barbers (mixed in with the superman aftershave he used on his clients), got a penchant for cigars now in fact. Was a great day out.

I now live in Peterborough but have been a Barrow fan since my Nan took me to watch my first game in 1958.

I love this!

I don’t have the same history as some on here but want to join in.

From Barrow, now settled in Newbarns, and despite resisting in my younger years started going properly in the 95/96 season and the bug really bit me. Been to every home game I could manage since then and what a ride it has been! Not to mention away games; from Emley and Frickley and Winsford to Tranmere, Bolton and Chelsea!

Things aren’t great right now but for me the last 30 years of following this team have given me so much and I still have some of the old voice left to give my all in return.
Life is always better when it's better

Born in Barrow, but haven't lived there since 1965. My first memory is going with my father on a chartered train in 1954 or 55 to see Barrow play Sheffield United in the FA Cup. We lost 5-0. Coglan was in goal because our regular keeper (Gerry Lowery I think) was injured. I do remember being quite shocked to see some of our supporters throwing the light bulbs out of the carriage window (carriages had compartments wih screw in light bulbs in them days). Football hooligans, eh?

In my teens, I really enjoyed the trips to away matches in the supporters' coach, then later driving to matches in my own car with a couple of school mates. My first job was in Preston and while there I saw an FA Cup First Round 3rd replay at Deepdale, when Barrow beat Alfrteon Town 2-0.

I'm from Barrow, my roots are in Barrow but I left in '71 with work and only briefly returned with work in '76. I live in South Lanarkshire. The main reason I get back now is to watch the soccer.
Don't let the old man in.

Kirkby in Furness.... was at BAFC from 2004-2013. From picking up cones to being part of Bayliss/Sheridan staff. Was gifted the title of Director of Football. Which, as far as I was concerned, was keeping Bayliss off the pitch/away from refs/ 4th officials etc . I consider myself to have been extremely lucky to be part of the club during this exciting, interesting time . The weekly wage bill at the end of my tenure was £3600.
