Barrow AFC V Gloucester
Re: Barrow AFC V Gloucester
I really don't rate Greg Mills at all, he shouldn't be playing on the left wing. Yesterday there were a number of times he received ghe ball on the wing and stood still with the ball. Not once did he go down the line, every time he cut inside. Play someone else or put him on the right wing where he is obviously more comfortable.

This thread makes for depressing reading. I can entirely understand the negativity running through most of the above posts (apart from Jonty, who must live in a very, very sunny place). I agree that it was dire yesterday, a thoroughly drab event. Even though we were camped out in their half for the second period we were clueless in terms of creativity. But, the really disappointing thing is how many fans are coming on here saying they won’t be turning up again (in the near future). I can entirely understand that but I would say to all of you, try and think again.
The posts of Spirit of 1990 and Barrowabc say it all really in so far as they express their disillusionment but go on to say they won’t be giving up. Good on you, lads! I understand that money can be tight for some, and when it’s spent on watching dross like yesterday it can be very hard to justify. However, if we don’t take care of today then there will be no tomorrow as far as this club is concerned and I’ll guess that most of the fans on here who are saying they won’t be going to the next game have a considerable love for this club and don’t want to see it go under. Well, hard though it is to stomach, the fact is that “not going” to the next game only increases the likelihood of our demise. I’ve been around long enough to remember the really dark days of 1972 to circa 1977/78; compared to those days, the match yesterday was a feast of creativity and invention! The truth is that in cold, harsh terms it was like money thrown away going to watch us during that period but we knew there could be no good times in the future if we didn’t survive those bad times. And, slowly but surely, a few “good times” did come along, albeit only intermittently (but isn’t that the nature of watching Barrow?). Along came acceptance into the Conference (then the Alliance) in 1979, the unforgettable 83/84 season under Halom, the Wilkie years and Wembley 1990, another promotion in 1998 (though under a regime which was later found to be less than harmonious for the club’s health) and then the promotion of 2008 and Wembley again in 2010. There’s the edited highlights - - - - - enough to require barely more than the fingers of one hand to count in 41 years of non-league football. However, none of them could have happened if everyone had thrown in the towel in the early 70’s.
It feels a bit like that now but the football (believe it or not, even yesterday’s show) is actually much better than it was in the early 70’s. I am not going to beg any fan on here, but just ask you good folks to think about it; stop going now and we could disappear completely. Or stick it out, abysmal though the performances may be at present, and we might, just might (but no promises of course) have some more good times watching our beloved Barrow Soccer “tomorrow”.

Re: Barrow AFC V Gloucester
Greg Mills gets a bit of stick on here but is he another player been played in wrong position .?He is right footed and therefore always has to cut back to cross which may not be helping his game
Another player who seems more off the pace than when he first came......

PJ Daly sums it up for me. It's not good at the moment, but I would never turn my back on the club. I don't live in Barrow now, but if I did, I would be there every week, come what may. I used to travel every other week from Preston to watch the team through some pretty dark years - and some good ones! As a football fan, you have to take the rough with the smooth.
Re: Barrow AFC V Gloucester
Excellent post - I was going to post something very similar. I would just add that, when the good times do return, those who stick by the club will enjoy it all the more for having helped to make it happen. Those who only come when we are winning are not too far removed from the 'armchair' Man Utd supporters, or the thousands who followed us to Wembley/Sunderland/Middlesbrough.pjdaly wrote:This thread makes for depressing reading. You can change your wife, but you can't change your football team.
Re: Barrow AFC V Gloucester
Firstly, I believe Darren Sheridan in Chief scout at Plymouth Argle therefore is working for his brother.
Secondly, many people have moaned on this link about not going again but I bet many of them do turn up for other games as they are true Barrow fans and care - that's why they are having a moan at the moment. I'll never stop coming to see Barrow when i can because of work & distance from barrow it's not possible to be a regular. How can I not as I've been supporting the team since circa 1962 when my grandad took me to my first match. I've never lived in Barrow but it's in your blood and I know there are many more people like me.
But we have the right to question whats going on. I hope Bayliss can pull us through (even though I'm not convinced). Stability is the key - look at Ferguson's Man Utd or Liverpool's 70's & 80's teams. Yes I know we do not have the financial clout as those types of clubs but I do understand the boards commitment to stability. If Dave does go then I hope whoever they appoint stays for some considerable time to develop us. If Dave stays then lets hope this young team can develop. By the way all the guys like Mills, Allen etc need is a bit of confidence and one thing I'm pleased about being a Barrow fan is we are not booing the team or the manager - that would be awful and unfair and destroy their confidence.
But we are allowed to moan!

After reading most of this thread I agree with this one the most32mile_cul-de-sac wrote:Big fan of DB and have never hid that fact, promotion would kill the club so not to bothered about that. I like db but his man management skills are [SwearFilter] poor and again Parkinson
Didn't even get on poor poor management is one of best players we have
Yet bayliss don't like him WHY ? Don't get it really

Re: Barrow AFC V Gloucester
My first game yesterday as I was visiting relatives up in Barrow. Took my 6 year old to his first Holker St experience! Well I'm sure that garbage has got him hooked! The only positive was that it only cost me a pound!
The game was poor. Some half decent defending against a very poor Gloucester team. Eddie showed the only passion and actually wanted to move forward with the ball. Mills and Allen were dreadful. Mills never once went past the full back, infact I don't think he ever tried. Whether out of position or not, that's just wrong. He has the look of a good player until the whistle is blown Allen did nothing worthwhile and should have buried his 1 chance.
Arnison should play with Johnson, especially if we want to continue lumping it 100 yards into the air for their centre halves to clear.
One thing to note was when DuranDuran was throwing his missiles, nobody knew where to go. Bayliss had to egg them on to go forward. Surely this drill should be in place, otherwise what's the point of training? Use it right and it could be effective.
Dave doesn't know his best team yet. However, I'm not sure even that team will give us the entertainment we all crave. Will I bring the lad next time. Of course I will. Will he want to come ............probably, because his dad loves the club and one day he might too.

Stood behind Ray Wilkie for years. Best education I ever had.

12 games? I'm out. Might come to a few more home games if I can be bothered. Once there is a change of manager then hopefully that'll persuade me to come back.32mile_cul-de-sac wrote:Big fan of DB and have never hid that fact, promotion would kill the club so not to bothered about that. Steve Herbert supports the nob theory - Saturday 4th February 2012.
If this bus crashed and everybody on it died, Barrow football would end - Daz Boyle, Boston away, August 9th 2014.
