Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
I actually thought they were very nice tributes and very moving so agree with your view I wonder if there is another way tributes can be made to be honest I have never seen this done elsewhere - yes former players etc but not fans of the club - it's a nice touch and fantastically done by DarrenPRR wrote:A brief obituary was read about each of the departed followed by polite applause after each, including participation from the Tranmere fans, which in turn was followed by a well observed period of silent reflection. Fitting and dignified in my opinion, unlike your rant. There is no right or wrong way to show respect, it is an individual decision.pjdaly wrote: I am not going to apologise for sounding like a stuck record for even though I have made the following point on about three previous occasions on this forum over the last five years it’s bad practice on the part of the club that means I have to make it yet again; the tribute to the five fans was fairly insulting, squashed in at half-time as it was with people milling around. It lasted about thirty seconds! It should have been done at the start, with the players gathered around the centre-circle and with a full minute on the referee’s whistle. The last time I mentioned this on here it raised a debate as to who should qualify for a tribute and under what circumstances. That is a worthwhile debate but what is certain is that it should be done properly or not at all. The way it was conducted today was all wrong and disrespectful to some long-standing fans of the club. Shameful. Deeply embarrassed on more than one count to call myself a Barrow fan tonight. Paul Casson, I do hope you read this for one of your former school-colleagues was one of those not given the proper respect today.

Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
I don't give a shit about United, city or any other side - I live in walking distance of city and tram ride from United - I only have one side and that's barrow - so I'm hurting by the result without having the luxury of some other side to fall back onBombadel wrote:Yes as mentioned above, why not a yellow for diving as well, as the Tranmere player seemed to be shot by the invisible sniper in the first half? Easy tiger, everyones hurting by the result, not just you. Strange how Tranmere played much better than they did at home. Just thought it unusual that someone has posted this on a Major Forum.Bingo wrote:I don't give a [SwearFilter] about United, city or any other side - I live in walking distance of city and tram ride from United - I only have one side and that's barrow - so I'm hurting by the result without having the luxury of some other side to fall back onBombadel wrote:Yes as mentioned above, why not a yellow for diving as well, as the Tranmere player seemed to be shot by the invisible sniper in the first half? Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
where ever I've worked or lived I've met other people from Barrow so I don't find it too unusual
Anyway no offence
it was embarrassing but I'd be gutted if I was a Tranmere fan in the grand scale of things - when I first started watching barrow we were in this league playing in front of similar crowds to now whilst Tranmere were in the second tier of football and in the play offs in the early 90s for a place in the premier league - that must be embarrassing to be where they are now -

Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
A turgid scrap not worth the entrance fee turned eventful in a dramatic final 20 minutes that the travelling fans will reminisce on fondly for decades to come.
Tranmere, winners of the central midfield where again we were deficient, 1 up and comparatively comfortable, it didn't look like we'd ever score.
The introduction of Haworth wide right (with Jordan Williams moving wide left) and Walker joining Cook up front felt like a better blend, and proved potent.
Symington counter dribbled at surprising pace from the edge of his own area to threaten Tranmere's, refusing Haworth on the overlap. Fortunately when tackled, the ball broke kindly, Haworth crossed left footed deep into the area where Walker pursued, disappeared out of sight, and, seemingly dubiously, was awarded a penalty.
The referee, happy to award two soft penalties but allow blatant dissent, somehow did not book goalkeeper Davies for his over the top protestations. Walker, impressively stoic despite the delay, clattered the penalty home, rammed the rebound in for net bursting pleasure, and antagonised Tranmere some more.
A goal from nothing, the crowd noise finally rising, this was ours to win. A Tranmere counter broke down in centre field, an errant pass hitting a retreating Barrow man, enabling a quick switch left to right, where 3 men were free, a hung up cross, a giant leap from Grand, a valiant outstretched palm from newly cast villain Davies, a touch onto the right post, the ball rolling over the line, 2-1! The margins in resurgent Barrow's favour.
Soon after Dixon athletically tipped over high to his left, favourable run of the ball had possession at Haworth's feet in centre field through accident not design (Edit: on seeing the highlights, actually well found, a good, direct attack). He released Walker in behind down the right, who rolled the perfect pass across to old mucker Cook to side foot home from 6 yards. 3-1 on 87 minutes, game surely won, the less resilient visiting fans now streaming out of the Holker St End to the warmth of the coach aiming to hasten a miserable journey home.
Tranmere were broken. Soon after the resumption, a move by the visitors floundered, we regained the ball, turned purposefully to counter, the crowd roared, Tranmere were surely finished. Remain focused, disciplined, retain possession and a scarcely deserved win would be ours.
No. Our central softness was brutally punished. Desperately poor ball retention loaded pressure onto the backline which collapsed obligingly: Maynard given so much room to expertly arrow home from the edge on the verge of added time; a long clearance muffed by Ashton in the box allows Hughes to walk around Dixon for 3-3; a quick switch left finding Symington out of position tucked in centrally, ball pulled back, too much room for Kirby's strike, deflected high to Dixon's right, 3-4. Stunning.
Goalkeeper Davies - who mere minutes earlier was lurking on halfway seeking permission to push forward to salvage a point, while being rightly barracked for his penalty shenanigans - was now in the dugout, one of a mass of bodies ecstatically celebrating an incredible turnaround.
Oddly, I don't feel deflated. If we were anywhere other than mid-table this would hurt. It was an intriguing end, strangely enjoyable if you allowed yourself to be temporarily detached.
Or maybe it is because, across the 95 minutes, Tranmere were superior. They had sharper movement and won more scraps. This wasn't the footballing God oversleeping, realising the score, and desperately rearranging the pieces to prevent little Barrow completing a league double over Tranmere. This was a brutal savaging of deficiencies we've seen all season. If it'd ended 3-1 my summation would be similar. Central midfield cannot control games. This needs correcting in this transfer window as a matter of urgency or lower midtable life could soon turn rather uncomfortable.

Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
They were like a pub team, not full time professional players who are very fortunate young men to be making their living from playing football.
Not just from seeing this remarkable game, but having watched about 11 games this season, in my opinion it's simple.
Most of the players are just not good enough for this league.
Many are insufficiently athletic - it's not an extra training thing - they just haven't been born with an ability to be sufficiently fast fit and strong.
Too many can't play with authority, consistency and reliability in their respective positions. Makes team work very difficult.
Not one player has genuine pace.
Several lack sufficient footballing intelligence - they just don't know what to do with the ball when they have it, and have no idea where to go when they haven't.
With some there is an apparent and pervading impression of lack of commitment - unforgivable.
A lot of the team just aren't simply skilful enough with the football to deserve the opportunity to play.
There is lack of mental toughness - under pressure it results in disorganisation and panic - see last few minutes of yesterday's game. It also happened away at Halifax earlier in the season.
Some people then wonder why we play long ball football...
Re the above its generally only privately that I have a go at individuals, but it's becoming sorely tempting.
Cox will really earn his crust if he can get them up after this - and get them up to avoid relegation - that now is a real threat.
Forget top 10, think National League North.

Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
Was gutted yesterday to go from such a high to such a low I'm just glad Casson was there to see if and he can see what a awful squad of players week have I would keep livesy grand symington cook walker Jordan Williams cowps Mellor and that's about it we are crying out for wingers and a class centre midfielder who could play with Mellor who looks like he is lost weight
Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
Well that was [SwearFilter] dreadful. No bottle whatsoever.
I don't know which was worse, the highlights or the game itself? 7 goals and only 4 mins of highlights? We've had more for a 1-0 loss. Pretty much missed both tackles leading to the penalties and the aggro before and after Walkers pen. Poor do.

Re: Barrow v Tranmere match thread
Ashton had an absolute mare. Definite penalty as he was all over their bloke, and that complete [SwearFilter] up at the end.
I've no idea what he's moaning about to the referee. I'd expect a lot more composure and bottle from a 30 year old left back whose played well over a hundred league games. Write it off and move on to Halifax.
I hope they got a right bollocking.

Spineless lot. Can't see us doing anything against a resurgent Halifax next week.
