A bit of fun but absolute bunkum
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Ultimately it was all a load of balls.

Didn't Alfreton knock us out in the early 70s? Quite sure we were in the old D3 at the time. I have a fading memory but seem to remember them doing so...litefoot wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 11:35 amYou're correct. I've got the Complete Record of the FA Cup book to hand which lists every team who've made the 1st round records since 1871.
Barrow's defeats to a non-league team while members of the FL:
1921-22 - Lancaster Town 4th Qualifying Round
1922-23 - Bath City 6th QR
1923-24 - Carlisle 4th QR
1927-28 - Workington 4th QR
1928-29 - Mansfield R2
At the time, Carlisle and Workington were in the NE League and Mansfield were in the Midland League.

Certainly not! We drew at Alfreton, drew the replay at Holker Street, drew the next replay at Chesterfield (I think) and won the 3rd replay at Deepdale 2-0. I was at all the games except the one at Chesterfield.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:48 pmDidn't Alfreton knock us out in the early 70s? Quite sure we were in the old D3 at the time. Those were the days - keep playing til you get a result, none of this penalty shoot out rubbish

Spot on Jim. Most controversial part of the tie was the second replay at 'neutral' Chesterfield which I believe is around 10 miles from Alfreton. I was at the third replay at Deepdale which we won comfortably probably because the plucky part-timers were worn out by then. If I remember rightly Joe Fletcher scored one or both of our goals.Jim wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:55 pmCertainly not! All 4 ties played between 15th - 24th November 1969. We lost 3 - 0 to Barnsley in the next round.SKIPPER wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 4:07 pmSpot on Jim. Don't let the old man in.

Slightly off topic but speaking of Alfreton. Watched their cup game with Walsall last night and there was a complimentary comment from Martin Keown. Discussing Walsalls' recent form he said he watched last weeks game at Barrow where they were outplayed and given a football lesson by a well-organised Barrow side.

Martin Keown would have fitted in beautifully to our side of 20 years ago. Pity he wasn’t crap enough.

Arrhh yes. Thanks for reminding me. I remember now. It was a close shave, though!Jim wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:55 pmCertainly not! Yes. I heard him say that. The other commentator mentioned us a few times during the game too.SKIPPER wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 8:53 pm Slightly off topic but speaking of Alfreton. Sorry to re-hash what seems to become an annual argument but I heard on breakfast tv this morning a definitive answer from a sports commentator in answer to the question ' who decides the draw numbers ?'. To cut straight to the chase it is decided by the draw order from the previous round. Put simply the winners of the first game drawn in tonights fourth round will automatically become No.1 in the fifth round draw and so on. Hope that puts that to bed.Hong Kong Bluey wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:01 pmThe club tweeted this on Friday. One of you is wrong...

Ipswich Town v Maidstone United picked for TV, so far Maidstone have picked up £231,375 in prize money and will receive £110,000 from TV could be a really good crowd at Ipswich(much more when we played them) so the total could well be close to £400,000, not a bad little earner is it just shows what can happen in the Cup.

That's about the amount it would cost Maidstone to replace that aging 3G pitch with a real one. Clearly they will be back in the Conference National next season so I wouldn't expect anything other than the pitch has a decent iron in the close season.behind the goals wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 9:56 pm Ipswich Town v Maidstone United picked for TV, so far Maidstone have picked up £231,375 in prize money and will receive £110,000 from TV could be a really good crowd at Ipswich(much more when we played them) so the total could well be close to £400,000, not a bad little earner is it just shows what can happen in the Cup.

A new pitch would be nice.
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
No it doesn't. It's nothing to do with ball numbers. Let's say, for example, Barrow had scored a last minute equaliser at Maidstone. One of the Maidstone fans is so angry that he isn't concentrating on the way home, and just happens to run over one of the people who is due to be involved in the Cup draw a few days later. That means the entire draw would have been different. This of course is a very extreme and unlikely example, but the point is that even small things can have an effect on future events. e.g. the person making the draw sets off a few seconds later due to watching a rerun of the FA Cup goals programme, which now has an extra goal to watch. That few seconds could make the difference between him getting there safely or not.SKIPPER wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:01 pm
