Adam I'll be honest until the second half, I and others around me didn't know where anyone was playing it was a masterclass in how not to set up a team, Harrogate came with a solid back 4 and pressed us high up the pitch , it's embarrassing that we didn't realise Harrogate would play like this, fail to prepare, prepare to fail !Adam29 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 4:37 pmThey changed to a back 4 when wyll went down for a tactical break in the first half which was before the substitutions were madeblue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 3:43 pm
No we didn't we made the substitutions in the 40th minute that's no where near 75% !
So what's your point, Harrogate barely troubled us in the second half, but Dino had taken off Barkhuizen ( who can't play wingback but he's a natural winger ) so we were left with Mahoney and Gordon ( who I don't know where he was playing) but kept drifting out there ! and Newby out left!

Re: Barrow v Harrogate Town match thread
I was at the match and I thought our formation kept changing at one time we looked to have five players defending. When I got back I looked at the BBC lineup site and it had our formation down as 5-4-1 which I’d tend to agree with.blue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 5:18 pmAdam I'll be honest until the second half, I and others around me didn't know where anyone was playing it was a masterclass in how not to set up a team, Harrogate came with a solid back 4 and pressed us high up the pitch , it's embarrassing that we didn't realise Harrogate would play like this, fail to prepare, prepare to fail !

This old saw keeps being trotted out despite the fact it's reiterated time and again that it's a tripartite decision: DoF, Head Coach and, er, the other one. It was made quite clear in January that most recruits were at Gallagher's request and no one stood in his way.blue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 5:13 pmJonty I agree BUT woods is in charge of recruitment, we all knew in January the recruitment was again crap yet Paul Hornby thought that we'd recruited well so what chance of we got ?Jonty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 4:56 pm It’s all down to quality of players and recruitment. That is the make or break of any side. You need 100% effort AND quality. This is more important than who is the Manager/ Coach and regardless of formations.
If you have effort and lack quality = struggle
If you have quality and lack effort = struggle
Then you also need 8 out of 11 on top of their game, every game, to give yourself a chance. If more than three are having stinkers, it’s too much for the rest to carry. Yes the back pass was punished last night but there was still 80+ minutes to get back into it and we fell short.
If we escape the drop there has to be a whole new approach to recruitment.
Don't let the old man in.

That might be the official line! But why then would need a director of football? I remember speaking to Pete Wild when a game was cancelled and I asked how did we get Telfer and his reply was you tell me and just smiled!MisterPleasant wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 6:28 pmThis old saw keeps being trotted out despite the fact it's reiterated time and again that it's a tripartite decision: DoF, Head Coach and, er, the other one. I was told the other day that Whing wanted a winger from Solihull but was told he wasn't good enough for league 2 ! Jack Stevens ( Oldham)

So it proved to be on this occasion Whing wasn’t good enough for league 2. What the future holds who knows.blue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 7:14 pmThat might be the official line! The way I understand it is that the DoF's main role is the budgets. negotiating, contracts and financial side, something which, given his background, Iain Wood would seem to be pretty well suited.blue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 7:14 pmThat might be the official line! It's subject to an NDA so nobody knows except the parties concerned. Judging how quick Pete Wilds solicitors were on the phone to Paul Hornby to remind him of the NDA after he spoke about it on Radio Cumbria I suspect the disclosure of that NDA by anyone involved would prove pretty costly

A manager didn't put the NDA clause on it doesn't take Poirot to work out why this was done !Main Stand SeasonTct wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 7:48 pmIt's subject to an NDA so nobody knows except the parties concerned. Apparently,Dino has succeeded everywhere he has been in rescuing clubs from the bottom.
Even though those clubs were struggling I'll bet they were able to deploy a proper back four for example and not have to rely on kids.
Even perceived at one point as no hopers Newport and Shrewsbury are capable of putting results together.
I'm not saying we won't win another game but, I think relegation is all but a certainty now.

Unfortunately Mall I think you're right we've too many of our good players injured and Dino can't really change things without them !mall wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 8:16 pm Apparently,Dino has succeeded everywhere he has been in rescuing clubs from the bottom.

Inclined to agree with you there Mall. It was criminal that opening half-hour. I've seen us in the NPL when there was a bit riding on the outcome of particular games and whoever played for us back then played FOR US, the clubs supporters as well as their own personal pride. And that was after the players being at work the same day! Imagine the state of this pack of fraudsters after putting eight hours in beforehand? I cannot recall a more lacklustre starting eleven we've ever put out.mall wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 8:16 pm Apparently,Dino has succeeded everywhere he has been in rescuing clubs from the bottom.

That was unforgivable their collective lack of desire and application. I don't know if the manager baffled them with tactics beforehand but he should've just pinned the current league table up in the changing room and told them in no uncertain terms that they'd got themselves in this mess and it was now time to start getting themselves the eff out of it! The least we expect is a bit of passion.

Without exaggerating, I think Williams, Smith, Whitfield and Fletcher would all be First XI if they weren’t injured. Maybe even Sam Foley based on the aggression and determination we’ve seen from him in the past.blue nige wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 8:31 pmUnfortunately Mall I think you're right we've too many of our good players injured and Dino can't really change things without them !mall wrote: ↑Wed Feb 18, 2026 8:16 pm Apparently,Dino has succeeded everywhere he has been in rescuing clubs from the bottom.

That’s half a team. We have had no luck this season with injuries. I doubt at any stage we could’ve fielded our strongest XI. Some may moan ‘that’s just football’ but I’ve seen close to unchanged sides move between months during successful seasons.
Is it the damn footballing Gods, or are we acquiring injury ridden fellows. The answers often lie somewhere in the middle.
“We’ve just got to do the best, with what we have, while we still have it.”

Re: Barrow v Harrogate Town match thread
Oldham paid a large fee for Stevens that we couldn't afford and Whing and Craig Pead didn't want him. IIRC they intimated to supporters at a Q&A they didn't think he had the stamina to do a full season in league 2. Has had a few bad injuries one that required surgery since his move and only just got back to full fitness. I think Wilds smile when we initially got Telford and him saying "you tell me "was more about the surprise to him he choose us and nobody else took him rather than the conspiracy theory.
