There is a problem with that. You are now playing in the top line non-league echelon. Are there any locals who can seriously compete for a place? Even Emlyn was dismissed as a Barrow player on the grounds that he wasn't even good enough for them and now it's all swept under the carpet by erecting a statue and a centre to him in Barrow. I would have put it outside the entrance to the Liverpool stadium for all the thanks he got. Hypocrisy in the extreme!

PS. We don't have any locals playing either. Most are of warmer climate origins.

Doesn't the analogy with Emlyn Hughes mean that there are more likely to be players who could play at this level rather than less. He was obviously good enough but didn't get a game, there may be others now in a similar situation.

I'm sure when we're bottom of the league getting battered every week, we'll be pulling in big crowds!
As opposed to not having locals, being second from bottom and having crowds of just over 700, I see your point.

Very good that WW. It could be so.

However, will the powers that be dismiss the chance once again?

Even if there where locals playing they couldn't be doing much worse than the team is at the moment and would atleast wear the shirt with pride!
I'm sure any local would play for the club and wouldnt even want paying! It would be playing for the town n home team that they would get there (payment from) and the club could get themselves fanancially secure!

Whilst I agree with the posters saying local players haven't been treated properly by the club over many years (not just in the current era), it's simply not the case that there are the players out there to play in the Blue Square Premier at the drop of a hat.

Anyone who watched the pre-season friendly, or indeed Holker's cup game recently could see that.

If there was an academy, if there was a feeder club a couple of leagues up, which concentrated the best of the local players, perhaps when Doc's scheme starts to bear fruit in a few years, but ..who?? seriously.

I think folk have got a point re the rugby having more connection throgh locals with the town, but it's a completely different sport in terms of amount of players playing, structure, geography, money..everything!

I can't help feeling that when the team struggle this gets trotted out, and I also have known a lot of local footballers, elsewhere toBarrow over the years, who invariably felt that the better players in their team..eg their mates, relatives etc could have played at a higher level.

What is hypocritical about recognising a son of the town who captained his country at the national sport?

The 'Emlyn not good enough for Barrow' story is an urban myth that has persisted over the years. He played for Barrow Boys and was tracked by Blackpool as a schoolboy. Barrow didn't have a junior/apprentice programme; Blackpool did.

I can't see how having a team full of locals (that wouldn't play for nothing anyway) that would get walloped week in, week out could improve our finances.

Are you suggesting that our gates would stop at what they are now & people would pay the same to see a Barrow team full of lads from HOB's, Vickers sports club or Dalton Utd that probably wouldn't win a game all season.

You only have to look at the rugby to see that that's the case!
Well there’s a Forum first, someone talking 24 carat codswallop over two consecutive posts and then agreeing with himself on the third. You couldn’t make it up.

I'm hazarding a guess as it being one of the reasons the reserves team folded, because of a lack of interest?

To put it simply, the locals at the moment, aren't good enough. We have, arguably, our best local on loan from Burnley. I don't think Bayliss would dismiss a local straight away. There have been behind closed doors friendlies recently - maybe a few have been used then?
