I really love this stuff. But I think we were actually top of Division 3 once, even if for 24 hours or something.

Yes we were, and comfortably holding our own, until the inevitable 'it could only happen to Barrow' moment. Colin Appleton took ill. I suspect the board expected him back on his feet in a few weeks and hit the 'procrastination' button. Instead of appointing an interim cover a member of the board took charge.Appletons' illness was worse than expected and eventually led to him throwing the towel in. However in the meantime a lack of guidance led to us sliding down the table a fall from grace eventually ending in 1972. The biggest gaffe in the interim period was missing out on Peter Withe. After a good trial the board dithered over whether to offer him terms, which they eventually did. However by then he had packed his bags for South Africa where he was spotted by Wolves legend Derek Dougan and the rest is history.

Only top for less than 24 hours IIRC, having played on a Friday night.

That's correct, it was after a 4-1 win at Hartlepool.

A pity their Kent neighbours from Dover didn't read this!

Interesting-I remember my Dad telling me about this Gillingham match when I was a kid.
That's a good point as well-People get on about how far away Barrow is-Carlisle's nearly in bloody Scotland, a hell of a journey if you are travelling from the south!.

Argyle fan I think you'll find John Hore played in the game and local journalist Mike Sampson was at that match as a visiting fan. Barrow's derby will now of course be against Derek Adam's Morecambe and Ian Evatt always sings the praises of Mr Holloway who managed him at Blackpool. One other link Richard Davis who ran the Plymouth Schools Team played briefly for Barrow. Green Army.
