Famously, it was on Derby's Baseball Ground pitch that someone had to come on and measure up the correct place for the penalty spot which had been obliterated. Someone came on with a pot of paint and marked the spot before Gerry Daly was able to convert. Another world . . .

TBF I don't suppose Derby's pitch looks like that now. Those 50 years have seen a big improvement all round. There are many pictures on YouTube of players wading their way through mud and caked in the stuff as well.

You now have much tighter rules over player safety but I think yesterday the ref was taking the urine!

I assume it can be rolled and made firm (rather like the Valley Parade pitch on the Bradford match photo last week). Flat mud, ball bounce - sorted

A ball might bounce on flat mud, trouble is there’s that much sand in certain areas your feet just sink in it so you aren’t going to get much of a bounce off that.

Hard to get a good idea of how bad some areas are off photos.

there are some areas that are not good and were probably caused by the pre season building works.

I thought that the most interesting thing about it was that he felt the need to ring someone else for advice. Did he not have the guts to make the decsiion on his own? Heaven knows how he manages to make decisions during the match.

Very good point. Get the higher ups on side . Avoid responsibility. Fire proof your wet blanket decision.

Maybe its that type of brown nosing is why he was promoted to the Select Group 2 of referees at the start of this season just one step away from Premier league!!!!!!!

Ha, no serious question. I thought a new drainage system had been put in a couple of seasons ago. Does anyone have a rough ball park figure on how much it would cost to fix the problem ? The board have spent a small fortune on the ground over the last few years, sadly they don’t have a bottomless amount to throw at the pitch. I wonder what is the cheapest option we would need to get through next season.
