You’re right, Ian, about Ruthers being too inconsistent and now at the age of 25 you have to think he might never throw that off as just some sort of remnant from his youth. It seems that inconsistency may stay in his DNA throughout his playing days. He has been poor the last couple of seasons and I found it particularly frustrating because he came out of his shell and had a brilliant spell towards the end of the 10-11 season, suddenly started scoring goals with right foot and left, and looked like he was maturing into a real prospect. Instead of building on that he has just gone backwards in the two seasons since, which makes me think, as you say, that he’ll perhaps never fully hack it at that level.

I never had the remotest doubts about Rutherford’s ability but I think there was a massive self-belief deficit. Perhaps a move away might be the best thing for him. Certainly he took fearsome stick off the crowd and, like Bayliss, I felt for the lad on many an occasion. It reminded me of when I was a kid in the early 60’s when, I recall, we had a local called Keith Eddy who was mauled mercilessly by the Holker Street crowd. He ended up as captain of top-flight Sheffield Utd and finished his career playing for New York Cosmos alongside Pele and Beckenbauer. I’m not suggesting that now the “heat” is off, Rutherford is going to end up with a CV like that when he hangs up his boots but he may blossom a bit if the Southport crowd give him a break. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment but I was hoping Rutherford would stay, thinking he might, stress might, shine a lot brighter at BSN level.

Like you, Ian, I would say Ruthers goes with my very best wishes and sincere thanks for his efforts in every single match he played for us, and he will always be a part of our folklore because of his role in the 2010 Trophy final. I feel a certain dislike for many of last year’s squad, even former favourites such as Owen and Boyes, but Ruthers definitely goes with my best wishes and I hope he does great things with Southport. Top lad that, I’ve got a lot of time for him.

Yep, the very best of luck to Ruthers from me.

Above all others towards the end of last season he was the one player who didn't go into hiding and looked like he had the stomach for the fight. Very honest lad who's attitude and effort can never be questioned. He's got his failings as a player no doubt, but I hope he does very well for Southport. As someone else has said, he should always be remembered for his role in the Trophy final when he won man of the match.

Good luck Ruthers.

Should we start another thread soon - players who've joined us. Certainly not too many - 5? Feels like the close aseason is shaping up just like last year imo. And that worries me personally , whatever Bayliss says. Where are the 10 signed players he mentioned not so long ago he'd hope to have signed by now.

Ever so lightly concerned

Always put in a shift, if he was more consistant he wouldnt have been playing for us. Decent lad.

Bayles has just gone on holiday and most contracts don't end until this weekend when players not fixed up will start to look in earnest. Be more worried if things haven't changed in 2-3 weeks.

Think he had hoped for ten by the start of training.

Although he left quite a while ago ;) Grant Holt has signed a 3 year deal for Wigan for £2M.

Think DB said that Platt was looking towards Stalybridge and wouldn't be trialling here

That all figures. Teaming up again with the ex-manager of FGR.
