So McNulty has pace, he's been a top CH in this league and L2 but carrying 25st he can't be quicker than our defenders surely? What our defenders need to start doing in my opinion is the basics, clearing your lines, not gambling, and reacting to play developing around them before its to late.

Exactly right,McNulty no pace but read situations and just did the simple job well (and Jonesy) and also had that intimidating appearance.

McNulty didn't need the pace. He was always where he needed to be because he has a proper footballing brain.

It may not have been a matter of pace, but I don't recall McNulty having such a great game against Cooky when he last visited Barrow - which kind of makes the point that even the best defenders can have an off day. I am not sure what happened to his 'football brain' that day.

Regarding McNulty's positioning making up for lack of pace, isn't that what Ashton does 99% of the time?

McNulty was actually quite quick over 10 yards.

His brain was 20 seconds ahead of the attackers.

yes people can have an "off-day" but these mistakes are happening far too often,ashton has struggled this season (not on his own though),i haven`t been surprised though because it was evident iast season that when any team attacked us we struggled (especially in the centre) but edmo has made the decision and he has to take the flack!

we are full-time there`s no excuses now so it`s obvious through these ongoing problems that

1/they are not being coached properly or

2/they are not up to it or

3/they are not listening!


i know it`s easy to criticise but if these mistakes were isolated people wouldn`t be so critical,but it doesn`t seem to be getting any better.

I sat behind the bench at Halifax.
I'm slightly worried about team spirit.
That's a managerial thing to engender.
When Howarth came off (lazy, and only plays when he has the ball), he was ignored by team mates.
There are 3 or 4 players who can easily play in the National League; the remainder will struggle.
Team spirit will keep the team up. Next season really good players need to come in.

McNulty was an intelligent defender who read the game well...
He was also a defender who strikers couldn't run through...
and it took them too long to run round him...

McNulty was strong , nasty and would not lose out on a header.
