Fair enough but you’ve got to say that it’s mighty generous of Cumbria County Council to provide us with roads, emergency services, care, education, recycling, etc. Despite us being in another county like.

"Generous to provide us with" Who do you think pays for it all? We do, as well as all the damage done to our cars by potholes and speed bumps above the recommended level. I emailed Cumbria County Council about them and was told "we're looking into them". That is not a joke but the gist of their reply, and you defeat your own point as they are responsible for them as we are part of their administrative area. Problem is, a bit like Barrow AFC, those in Carlisle, esp. James Phillips. look down on those in little old Barrow eh!

You could say the same for Lancashire. Lancastrians are not interested in Barrow. They see it as being in Cumbria, which it is.

Interesting observation this - but not I think correct. The word County - nobody will be surprised to read - is a very old word. However it has always been used as a generic. It can mean any area defined for administrative, geographical or cultural purposes. So Cumbria is both a county and an administrative area.

Am in the fortunate position of being pre 1974. So I’m not in any doubt that I’m Lancastrian but can be Cumbrian when I choose to. The Cumbrian bit comes in useful living in Suffolk as most have a rather romantic notion of the Lakes which I unashamedly play on.

But I’m fortunate. I can fully understand those born after 1974 who are frustrated. In all its attributes Barrow is and has always been Lancastrian.

We may all be able to recognise a herdwick from 20 paces but that doesn’t mean that we are shepherds.

Why? Should I have done? I don't live in the administrative area of Lancashire. As I said earlier, if you read it properly, CCC are responsible for resurfacing and repairing the roads in Barrow, as it part of their administrative area.

I think everyone can agree that Barrow and the surrounding areas have much more in common with neighbours to the south than those in the north.
But what's in a name? Cumbria/Lancashire, people's Republic of Barrovia, it's all a moot point. The historical boundaries were never changed, but it's generally accepted that Barrow is in Cumbria. In this day and age where you can identify as whatever you like, do just that.

If you're travelling 2 hours to a game, regardless of the county you're in, it's not a derby though. Not really. Although the rabid Carlisle supporters at work don't half make a big deal of it. Bless 'em, must be nice to finally have a "friend" to play with being so far up in Scotland

I'm not in the least bit bothered! Why would I be? I live in Barrow and this is a Barrow forum.
However I'm sure that others are bored as we have gone way off topic, and you are making fatuous arguments.
I suggest if you want to continue this debate we start a separate thread, or comment on the many there have been over the years about this topic!

The county will still exist it’s just the councils that are changing
