The groundwork for signing Wes Hoolahan was done 20 months ago. Contact was made when we knew his plans were evolving and he came to us for pre-season, getting a positive view of the club and manager whilst we confirmed his fitness and attitude. We hoped he'd sign for last season but didn't throw toys out of the pram when he decided to give Australia a go. A season later and he came back after playing few games and with Covid making Australia less attractive. We were first in line to sign him because he knew we valued him and he would enjoy the role we offered. He only plays saturdays and works with the physios to manage recovery and game time.

It's a joy and privilege to watch him but also a testament to the setup and manager that he's found such a successful niche in the side. We've won and drawn plenty of matches without him and it's rare that we've been able to be as comfortable as we were on saturday - but that comes from the confidence of results and being top. The same players and manager have struggled in other games - including Barrow at the Abbey.

Watching him on Saturday right from the off you could tell by his body language he didn`t look happy and when he got "injured " i wasn`t surprised ! ;)
