On 1 April 2023, the administrative county of Cumbria will be abolished and replaced with two new unitary authorities: Westmorland and Furness (Barrow-in-Furness, Eden, South Lakeland) and Cumberland (Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland).
Interesting to see if we still have Radio Cumbria, as Cumbria will not exist!

Born in Urmston raised in Stretford. Barrow parents/grandparents & great grandparents.
Now Urmston & Stretford part of Greater Manchester & Barrow in Cumbria.
But same goes for numerous places throughout the country e.g. Croydon is always a Surrey town to the older locals but is considered part of Greater London. South Croydon area has Surrey/Croydon postcodes north Croydon has London postcodes. Is Walsall in Staffordshire or the West Midland conurbation? It goes on and on.

THE GOVERNMENT has said that Cumbria WILL continue to exist as a ceremonial boundary after county changes, despite a minister's letter stating: “the county of Cumbria will be abolished.” Cumbria is currently undergoing a once in a generation overhaul of its local government

Just a bit of craic bud and as you say if HM Government don’t know if Cumbria will exist or not what chance for you and l? As for Andyg’s ‘Lancashire 100s’ map - wow! I had never heard of it although l always wondered why we had ‘North Lonsdale Hospital’ in Barrow back in the day.

You could go on and on couldn't you pal? Looking up Lonsdale you get back to the politicians as Westmorland and Lonsdale is a parliamentary constituency.

Yes, my family were originally from Oldham and I heard it referred to on the news a few days ago as "the most deprived part of Manchester"

But what's in a name? Cumbria/Lancashire, people's Republic of Barrovia, it's all a moot point. The historical boundaries were never changed, but it's generally accepted that Barrow is in Cumbria. In this day and age where you can identify as whatever you like, do just that.
If you're travelling 2 hours to a game, regardless of the county you're in, it's not a derby though. Not really. Although the rabid Carlisle supporters at work don't half make a big deal of it. Bless 'em, must be nice to finally have a "friend" to play with being so far up in Scotland

But that's just it, isn't it? You/we have 'nothing' in common with neighbours in the south 'or' the north.

Furness originally in Yorkshire so more in common with neighbours to the East. Been part of Strathclyde as well so a part of Scotland at one time.
Local government reorganisation will see Cumbria’s seven existing councils abolished by 2023 and replaced by two new unitary councils. Probably a political power grab by the crooked Tories.
Wonder if we could try for membership of Serie B after all the Romans were here once upon a time.
