He didn’t elaborate in his interview but I got the impression the players were told in no uncertain terms that wasn’t good enough

I have to say that Carlisle are beginning to exhibit the signs of a Mark Hughes side. Their XG today was 2.08. How on earth did that game end 0-0 ? For answers ask Bradford City supporters.

Because our strikers are Sunday league standard - but don't read too much into that XG. Gillingham had one bounce back out off the underside of the bar (which must have been close to being over the line), we made a lucky clearance off the line, and they had a strong shout for a penalty waved away. We were abysmal today, every bit a non-league side. If I were a Barrow fan I'd be rubbing my hands with glee at the prospect of playing us on Thursday. There is no fight in this side, they simply aren't up to the task. A handful of decent, honest lower league players mixed in with a bunch of overpaid, underperforming charlatans. It's an absolute shambles, and there's no way out of this.

Wouldn't be so sure. We played the second half today as if we were coasting towards the end of the season with the job done. Anyone would've beaten us on that showing. The only upside is that it's another lesson for Whing in terms who's still determined to put a good end to the season together and who's on the beach with a view to moving on in the summer.

I wonder whether this level of sloppiness is increasingly becoming an away factor. Certainly far too early for “on the beach”.

I doubt they’ll play that way on Thursday. They’ll get flayed alive by the crowd if they do. There is no hiding place at HS from a hostile bluebird fan.

Yes. It’s seems to me with the squad in general that our average level of performance is not good enough for whatever reasons and that this has generally blighted our season. It’s not even directly attributable to any one coach.

Since he’s been here AW has shown that he can get a performance that does in some way reflect the potential out of this group of players especially at home, and that’s when you see a rise in levels and results. But it is still very patchy.

As mentioned before, all that can be done currently is to rely on Whing to reach these levels often enough to complete the season and then re-construct his own squad.

Being unable to raise above these mediocre levels was what did for Clemence. It’s probably also part of the risk of hiring Mark Hughes at Carlisle. These guys can raise technical levels and make the team look potentially good. But that doesn’t translate into results necessarily unless the mental side can also be addressed.
