Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
I remember Barrow playing at Netherfield(Kendal) in a f.a.cup match in the late 1970's and someone had gone in the Netherfield ground and sprayed BARRROW on the wall

I don’t want to be nominated for ‘Pendant of the Week’ – but shouldn’t it have been ‘Barrow Ruled the 3rd’ – followed by the date (in brackets) of that Friday night in 1967? Further, a proprietary exterior gloss like Sandtex or Weathershield would have been (cont. Pg.94)
We will foller the soccer, over land and sea...

I also know who did it, says philmac in a cheeky, suggestive monty zoomer stylee!!
Not guilty, M'lud.
Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
It was 1968, not 1967. So I'm afraid I've beaten you to the 'pedant [sic] of the week' title!Wintergreen wrote:I don’t want to be nominated for ‘Pendant of the Week’ – but shouldn’t it have been ‘Barrow Ruled the 3rd’ – followed by the date (in brackets) of that Friday night in 1967? Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
Many years ago a friend of mine told me that the only graffiti on the Arc de Triomphe was 'Barrow rules the world'. My source was known for a bit of exaggeration and the odd porky or two but does anyone know if it was true?

remember it well.pjdaly wrote:Monty, you asked about the legendary former England captain Johnny Haynes, who played for Fulham at Holker Street in 1968. I think the name has virtually disappeared now, but here's a photo I took several years ago. You might need to copy it and blow it up to get a better view. Just by the end of the wall at the entrance to ASDA you can make out the name "Haynes". Unfortunately some irresponsible fool has, long afterwards, daubed some further graffiti over it in red. Clearly some people have no reverence when they're messing about thoughtlessly with their spray cans. Whoever put that offensive red paint on should be locked up. Did they not stop to think that this was the name of England's former captain they were defacing? To the right of the picture you can also make out "PNE"; I'm fairly certain this appeared after we played Preston in a League Cup tie at the start of our final season in the League, 1971-72 (I bumped into Don McEvoy the morning after that match and I recall he described it as a "ding-dong battle" - - - - regrettably, we got ding-donged 0-2).
Seasons to be cheerful.Part 16 3/4
Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
I heard a similar story. In the early seventies the main Barrow 'tag' was BBB standing for Barrow Boot Boys. BBB appeared extensively and in a lot of unlikely places and a story did go round that it was seen on the Champs Elysees which of course is where the Arc de Triomphe is. Similar stories- an element of truth, or complete nonsense? I don't know.Esso Blue wrote:Many years ago a friend of mine told me that the only graffiti on the Arc de Triomphe was 'Barrow rules the world'. BBB could also stand for the Bad Blue Boys of Dinamo Zagreb.

Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
Yep, saw them causing bother when in Zagreb at the Croatia v England match and they attend Croatia games so the BBB grafitti across Europe probably come from them unless there are other groups that have the same initials but the stuff in the UK probably belongs to us from when the BBB were popular in the 70's.sempre contigo wrote:BBB could also stand for the Bad Blue Boys of Dinamo Zagreb.
I've scribbled the odd bit off Barrow grafitti on my travels across Europe - I seem to remember me and Colty putting something on a wall at Kaunas station in Lithuania with some of the other footy related grafitti

Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
I believe the names of both Johnny Haynes and Steve Earle were daubed on the wall in question prior to or just after our fixture with Fulham on 30th August 1969.
I remember the game well mainly because they were the divisions big boys having been relegated the season before; we had an awful start to the season and had only taken one point so far that season (we got relegated at the end of it); I remember my father telling me about the great Johnny Haynes who was at the end of his career; I remember it was a brilliantly sunny day and against all odds we won 3-1 (Ellison, Garbett, Morrin). A much treasured BAFC memory.
The names Haynes and Earle were daubed on the wall and remained there for years.

Re: "Barrow Rule the Third"
I remember the game against Fulham very well- it was probably our greatest league victory ever. Fulham had been in the first division two seasons before and had some quality players. As I remember we outplayed them winning 3-1.We really did rule the 3rd on that day. The future looked very rosy indeed.
Little did we know that 3 seasons later we would be playing the likes of Ellesmere Port and Skelmersdale in the NPL.
Events off the pitch were equally interesting as both Barrow and Fulham had large contingents of skinhead/bootboys. In their regulation white t-shirts, blue jeans and braces, cropped hair and cherry red Doc Martins they were pretty intimidating and the police had their hands full keeping control- no ground segredation in those days. The police came up with the bright idea of refusing entry to anyone in boots so while some complied and were wandering around in their socks others managed to get into the ground by climbing over the wall at the corner of the Steelworks End and Dev road. I didn't witness any violence in the ground but there was a really lively atmosphere and lots of abusive singing- mainly aimed at the police if I remember correctly. At the end of the game I remember seeing a massive Fulham skinhead crying his eyes out. To this day I don't know if he was upset by the defeat or had had a slap [obviously not a kicking because their boots had all been removed!]
I can't remember another team coming to Barrow and painting so much graffiti- Putney Boot Boys sticks in my mind as I had no clue where Putney was! I imagine the graffiti was done before the game as the Fulham fans would be running too fast to the station to have time to paint the walls!
