Doesn't Russell Anderson attend Southampton/Portsmouth fixtures? Surely he can spout some info on this?
It was the 2010/11 season shirt which marked their 125th anniversary. It harked back to the original club shirt. This is what they said:
Fans will notice the shirt is without a commercial sponsor after our Chairman, Nicola Cortese, decided to give the kit back to the fans in celebration. This fantastic gesture has gone down extremely well with supporters and we expect shirts to be flying off the shelves.

Actually it's not just about selling their product, but brand awareness. Advertisers know that not everyone is going to buy something from seeing it on a shirt or from a commercial on tv. But it subliminally sticks in people's heads and it may or may not influence decisions in the future.

You might not buy walkers crisps from seeing it on a shirt, but there is more of a chance you might than if you don't see it at all.
I don't think there's any evidence of this. And if there was or is - it would be hard to prove conclusively.
That's why I've always cast doubts regarding the theories of Freud and Jung and all those other 'Mind Pilots'...
I'm not missing your point - I can see why you might want a shirt without sponsorship on it. What I was trying to stress is that I don't think it would ever happen as the person/firm who is sponsoring the team would want to maximise their investment. The problem is that if you want one, someone else might one and it becomes a slippery slope.

As to whether advertising works, look around you. It might not work on you individually, but as a whole it obviously has some impact otherwise why are billions of £'s spent on it each year across all forms of media?

That particular post of mine - was aimed at glasgowblue. Apologies.

This was the bone of contention:

"I think you're missing my point.

I've already stated I realise the importance of the business/sponsorship side of things.
However, my point was purely based on personal choice. I hinted at this when I mentioned 'Old Skool Rules' in an earlier post"

I'm still not convinced and neither do I believe that it does have that big an impact.
I'm NOT talking about Advertising in general - just in Football.

It'd be interesting to see what kind - and how much - research has been done to justify the amount of money that sponsors invest - with regard to branding on shirts, that is.

Thanks for that info.

Nice gesture from their Chairman. That's what Football's all about - the Fans!
C'mon, Mr. Casson...let's have a few shirts without the ads... :D

Hang on, advertising doesn't work? Somebody tell the billions of companies worldwide who are chucking away a significant portion of their cash on promoting their brand.

Never heard something so stupid.

And what you're asking is for Casson to turn down a few thousand quid in sponsorship, just so a handful of people can pretend it's the 70s when they buy a kit (which, incidentally, would still have the PlayerLayer logo on it).

Especially when the op gives the Leicester /Walkers sponsorship as an example. It must have struck a cord, shirt and stadium have been Kingpower for 7 years

The worrying thing is people will still buy that. It's awful, don't buy it and the club will have to change supplier next year

You'd hope that isn't the home shirt for next year, its an embarrassment.

Not surprised at all that they would pick something so terrible.
