But to pick out Waterston from a list that includes the likes of Holt, James x2, Walters, Cook, Arnold etc to use as your example doesn't tell the whole story does it?

You can't pick and choose who you want to use to prove your point - the other signings don't hint that our recruitment is "going backwards".
I haven't mentioned Waterston - I am commenting on the club's new strategy, then being accused of negativity.
But the whole article is about Waterston being the catalyst for bringing through more locals. "Now we are recruiting local part-time or amateur players" - you're implying that Waterston signing is a backward step.

It certainly a step in a different direction.

You are all over the place bud attributing outlandish comparisons, implications and comments to me that I haven’t made.

You have said that a focus on signing local players is proof we are going backwards - I am saying that you can't discount all the non-local players just to prove your (inaccurate) point.

But I know you're just being difficult because you've been called out by everyone on this thread.

Just been in the news that table toppers Macclesfield have the smallest budget in the league and started the pre season with 3 players. The season they are having is proof that getting a team that gels and gets results is much more than the budget being spent.

It reminds me of of one of my favourite films - moneyball. Albeit base ball related. True story based on a team with one of the lowest budgets punching above its weight. Their strategy was to analyse data from players who were either past it or had a major weakness. And to pick out their strengths and work out which positions would suit a players strength rather than the negatives. It can be done, but then those who are successful tend to move onto a bigger clubs.

Can't argue with that Jonty, except what Macclesfield have achieved is going against the grain somewhat, most teams build and add to achieve their ultimate goal.
Also they were probably proactive once they targeted the players they wanted, whereas we looked like we were very much reactive bringing quite a few players last minute just to make the numbers up.
Let's hope we now have a manager who will be entrusted to bring in the players of his choosing within budget to get the job done next season.

John Askew their Manager has been there since 2013.
We have had 4 Managers this season alone.
A team will not gel without a stable management team in place we've lacked that for whatever reasons.

Agree. Let’s hope we’ve now got a management team that can develop this idea of more homegrown talent and build a successful side.

A team can have the costliest players on earth but money counts for nothing unless you have team spirit, passion, committment and players who play for their team mates and the badge on their shirt. Go ask Ray Wilkie! :D

Go and ask Accrington Stanley. Lowest budget in football league and still top of the league

Exactly - but I'd rather ask Ray Wilkie (if he was still alive) how a team - Barrow AFC - a team filled with local lads and players from his North East locality won the FA Trophy in 1990.

I know how he'd respond - as we all do - because he produced a team infused with spirit, passion, committment and players who played for their team mates and the Barrow AFC badge on their shirt.

You don't get that from mercenaries!

Despite the fact that Nathan looked decent when he came on vs. top of the league on Saturday...

But just forget that, let's use this to have a go at the club again.
