Hmmm, in the 20th century another new strain of flu infected 20% of the world’s population and killed more people than lost their lives in WW1
By that measure we shouldn’t go outside because the common cold infects more people
The common cold only very very rarely leads to serious illness or death.

Jim wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 8:40 am I listened to a debate on the radio a couple of days ago and one person said that there were 10 million cases of TB worldwide in 2017, and in 2018 TB killed 1.5 million people. Over 20% of the cases were in India, but nobody suggested banning travel to India, or group gatherings in India, or screening arrivals in UK from India.

Corona seems much the same as flu, the only difference at present is that there is no available vaccination against it for the elderly and most vulnerable. I was working in the NHS when swine flu was all the rage: there was a lot of fuss about it at the time and I always suspected it wouldn't come to anything.

I think the media like things like this because they can fill a lot of airtime or newsprint. Also, they love wheeling out analysts and pundits to give their forecast (speculation) about the doom it will bring. And of course a lot of media people have been short of a topic since Brexit was sorted ;)
What? there is a vaccine for TB that you have before you go to India? as for people saying "its just flu" I agree the media have done no favours in overhyping this, but to say its just flu is a very dangerous myth to propagate. I have numerous friends and colleagues working healthcare, from Surgeons to consultants. Many of these experts are preparing for the worst. Just because the name is different is irrelevant. If there was anew strain of flu around the same advice would be give to avoid deaths.

The Government is meeting with sporting bodies and broadcasters on Monday, so it looks like they are preparing to play games behind closed doors.

Yeah right, my initial thread that Coronavirus could affect Sporting events is 'Nonsense and should be deleted'.

Expect you'd now like to shake my hand, bear hug and French kiss me as an apology. :sentoff:

Not quite the same as playing behind closed doors is it, which is what IF ANYTHING is likely to happen!

I took the info re Monday’s meeting from a report on 5 Live this evening.
That is fact not fiction.

If anyone is scaremongering it’s you! :sentoff:

My so-called 'scaremongering' were NOT my words, nor was it fiction but a fact, a copy of an Article from the Daily Telegraph (which you conveniently don't mention - you must be a Politician) a reputable Newspaper.

The reason I 'conveniently didn't mention it' is because I didn't know you had picked it up from the Telegraph, in much the same way that I didn't mention that my info had come from 5 Live. Let's call it a draw should we and put our energy behind supporting our fabulous team? :)

On the type of crowds we get there won't be any playing behind closed doors it would be a total over reaction, there will be more footfall in adsa on a Saturday afternoon than at Barrow football, what's next only two at a time into supermarkets

I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread that any closure would apply to crowds of more than 5000, but again that is supposition. We'll no doubt know more - or perhaps not - on Monday! :)

That was France I think and only applied to gatherings inside enclosed venues
