There were mitigating circumstances for the loss of form. Carlisle suffered more than most with players testing positive for Covid. That caused a massive fixture backlog and it took them until the last month of the season to get back up to full fitness. On top of that the training ground was out of use due to the severe wet winter. I think they ended up training in Penrith some days and Kendal rugby union on the all weather pitch.

I've seen worse reactions though it does make me smile when a club like ours manages to turn the tables - for once.

Reality is f course that these actions result from a process of long term decay at Brunton Park rather a dramatic rise in the fortunes of Barrow. Their limitations were exposed if you recall when they tried to purchase John Rooney for a ridiculously low fee a couple of years ago and were told where to go. We have also been kept aware through the postings of supporters such as Northern Soul of the thorough mess that the EWM fiasco has caused at Carlisle.

What probably hurts in this case is that both Zanzala and (if it is true, Farman) were both wanted by Carlisle and offered new contracts so these are not released players and Carlisle have been essentially outbid by the small team down the coast. When we are involved in taking a player from a peer club it always seems to act as an unwelcome reality check for some supporters of that club by bringing out into the open what they might otherwise be able to hide from themselves.

They seem to be having a go at Chris Beech on the Cumbrians website but for the life of me, I cant see that he is to blame unless you believe in the pure magnetism of Mark Coopers personality. I think hes done a pretty decent job with very limited resources. I would be surprised if our budget last season was not higher than Carlisles. He may actually be the one factor holding that club together at the moment. Carlisle have a habit of losing players in the close season and having to essentially rebuild each year. This year will be no different for them.

I'd say winning the National League title and regaining league status after never getting anywhere near previously was a pretty dramatic rise in our fortunes to be fair.
