Not saying I'm against having him in any way, in fact I'd probably enjoy if we had a manager who was a successful [SwearFilter].

I’m not a fan as has been well documented - by me ha ha.

He offered to fight me in the car park after a game way back when. Having said that, if he is the boards choice I’ll back him. We need another bit of needle in the dugout. Apart from Evatt, we’ve been too nice in that department for years.

The issue is not that he's disliked, its that he is just dislikeable. To understand this you need to remember who his father was - the rather dark and terrifying Terry Cooper of Leeds United (and England) fame. Even in a team of top notch psychos such as Hunter, Charlton and Bremner, Terry Cooper cast a more foreboding figure. Hard as nails, brutal in the tackle and completely expressionless at all times on the pitch, he reminded me of a character from a Hammer horror film. I even thought he might be Kendo Nagasaki for a while.

Some of these personality attributes have been passed on to his son who has the same withering attitude towards anything that he sees as anti-Cooper. And judging by the disciplinary record of son Charlie Cooper, there's definitely something in the old family genes. Since the possibility was mentioned of him coming to us I've really struggled to see how this would work. No doubting his ability as a manager and I think he could even with our budget put together a squad capable of operating in mid table at the very least. Whether he could maintain the illusion of a close relationship with the Board, supporters or players however I just dont know.

I don’t think Cooper is the right fit from a culture perspective. He always comes across of overly confrontational and abrasive, I think we need someone who can bring the whole thing together. Someone who will engage the fans.

His record seems ok and experience wise he probably ticks the boxes, but it’s not quite right.

One of the things with Mark Cooper teams that everyone hates about them is they always seam to have a midfield player skilled in the dark arts, someone who gets stuck in, stretches the rules from time to time and really winds up opposition fans - the type of player you hate the opposition to have - but love to have in your own side.
In many ways he's also similar to Ian Evatt - they've both got that smug annoying (for opposition fans) confidence that comes from knowing they've managed to do the hardest job in football - get a team promoted out of the National League....
