I won't say too much about 'Player of the Year' as I think whoever came up with that title can't have been around football much. Maybe it was the same person who penned the ludicrous tome about fan's behaviour elsewhere on here. However, running with it -

Bizarre comment - 'player of the year' is the standard term, always has been.

Ok then, do you put a number on how many fans you allow to run on the pitch?
1, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000.
Do you want hundreds and thousands on the field of play?
Then you might get opposing supporters going on and trouble occurring.
Might be a hypothetical situation, but it could still happen.
Better having a rule that stops anybody going on than none that might result in players, officials and other supporters being injured in any bedlam.

It beggars belief that some people can't see the logic behind the law which prohibits fans from entering the field of play!! You only have to look back as far as the mid 80's to see what happened when fans did run onto the pitch......at best it delayed the restart of the game as stewards tried to marshal people (sometimes hundreds of them) back into the stands, at worst it lead to riots as rival fans clashed on the pitch. I've got no problem with the law as it stands, and I suspect the vast majority feel the same. If you can't control yourself enough to not run onto the pitch then you should drink less before the game or stay at home!

Going onto the playing area is against the Football (Offences) Act 1991 and as such is a punishable offence

I remember, back in our football league days, running onto the field at the final whistle to slap the backs of our heroes - Brian Arrowsmith, Jimmy Mulvaney, Mick Hartland, Dave Storf, etc etc. We were kids, having fun, excited to be so close to our footballing heroes, sometimes receiving a friendly pat on the head from those players. WE were having FUN. PASSIONATE about OUR Team!

And that's what's missing from the game today. The dull, politically correct, minority have sank their claws into OUR beautiful game and are trying to rip it to shreds.

Is running onto the field of play such a big deal? Really? And before anyone mentions Atherstone - an isolated incident. Seen far worse. And let's be honest here - the police should have nipped that one in the bud before it even started.

What THEY going to do next? Ban people from collecting autographs? Ban the shouting of 'GOAL'!?

Absolutely right, how could you judge the intension of a fan who runs onto the pitch in a split second? They might just want a euphoric, platonic man hug after a goal or they might try and black someone's eye. Banning all encroachment is the only way to ensure the safety of the players and officials. That being said, the punishment should be equal for all, whether it's our fans or away fans.

When they vault over the wall, how do you know what they are going to do...until it happens?

I can see the safety concerns etc but also Tomahawks view point as everything is getting way too sanitized and your being molded into robots by society as for Hoss saying invited end of seasons celebrations, You can bet your life that at several grounds across the country on the last day of the season there will be Uninvited invasions after PA announcements & lines of police & stewards grouping to try and prevent these celebrations happening, they are policed differently, that's the issue for some.

Does the same not apply to end of seasons celebrations?? How do you know that a few won't goad the opposition players or even hit one??

You don't. But you can't stop hundreds and you can't police it. You CAN stop 2 or 3 and you CAN police 2 or 3 and so it should be too.

Course you can police it, very expensive mind but a full line of police shoulder to shoulder would do the trick after PA announcement of every person attempting to encroach will be arrested, but why take the joy away from the fans, Hoss have never run on the pitch at any of our triumphs down the years? No I haven't. i can't imagine I would either. But that's my choice and I really don't have any problem with those who do. It's a once a season celebratory outburst that generally doesn't lead to any trouble.
The point though, is that people running onto the pitch is not wanted and not invited excepting those specific occasions.

A full line of police shoulder to shoulder? Really? If you are going to start hypothesising ridiculous situations then you might as well add sniper towers too.
