Some of the older people on here will remember.
One season not sure if it was the last one we did not have a goalkeeper because of injury but were refused permission to loan one think Bobby Knox had to play as goalkeeper.
The same time I think it was Everton were allowed to sign a back up goalkeeper.Could have been the season they played in Europe.

No Pedro is correct. Bobby Knox holds two records I believe. First he was the first outfield player ever to come on as a substitute (think it was in 1965 v Wrexham).

But secondly I believe he was the first sub/ outfield player ever to play in goal. I’m sure a stat to (PJ Daly?) will confirm this.

Bobby Knox is indeed in the record books twice but it's not connected to Morecambe (first sub to score a goal, against Wrexham in the first match of the 65-66 season, and first sub to come on as a goalkeeper and save a penalty, against Doncaster on 27th December 1965, and I can see it in my mind's eye vividly like it was yesterday). But . . . erm . . . I don't see a Morecambe connection so I'll leave it at that.

I think Pedro must be alluding to our dying days in the FL in the April of 1972. There was a match (possibly a couple of matches) where Bob Knox had to play in goal. One was at home to Darlington and we slumped to a critical 0-4 hammering, a disastrous defeat which went a long way to sealing our fate and dumping us in the bottom 4, meaning we would have to apply for re-election (and of course we know how that ended up). I think very possibly Pedro is right in suggesting we tried to get a keeper in to cover for the missing Harry Thomson but were not allowed to and that's why Bob had to turn out in goals. I think Pedro is suggesting that when we lost players all those years ago we just had to get on with it even if it meant playing an outfield player in goal. We weren't allowed to call our matches off as Morecambe have been able to under the new rules. A lot has changed in the last 51 years.

In the second half, the Barrow goalkeeper Lionel Duffin had to be substituted due to injury.
Brave Bobby trots on to the pitch, but this time as a goalkeeper.
Minutes later, Doncaster are awarded a penalty and Jeffrey steps up to take it.
Knox peers through the driving snow and dives low to save the penalty.
Barrow held on for a famous 2-1 victory and Knox went in to the record books again as the first substitute ever to save a penalty.

Yes I stated nothing to be worried about because the rules are the rules and should be adhered to with no fuss.
Just showing how rules were bent in the past for bigger teams unlike little Barrow who alot of teams wanted out of the league.

Yes he was the first substitute to score a goal, against Wrexham on the opening day of the season. As already alluded to he was also the first substitute to save a penalty. What is not too strange about rhe latter is that he was earlier Barrow Boys goalkeeper. A more all-round player (I even saw him play at the heart of defence) has never worn the Barrow shirt and I think at times because he was local and part-time he has never got the recognition he deserved, Oh,and he wasn't a bad cricketer and athlete either.
