Alfreton. Those were the days. Playing a team from a place that I’d never heard of. Was it not Bobby Knox that landed the final blow? The memory fades.

Then again when I was a child I had no idea where Port Vale was either. But it sounded like such a nice leafy place where cows grazed happily by the seaside. Ironic since my wife’s family came from Burslem.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before, but the last time we played Spennymoor as a league club was in 1953 when we won 3-0 away. That was the season where we got to the 3rd round and lost to Swanseas in a reply after drawing 2-2 at Holker Street.

I also believe I was told told once that we never lost to a non-league club in our football league days up to 1972. There was one loss to Wigan Borough in 1926-27, who I thought might be non league, but I looked them up and they were in 3rd div north like Barrow.

Was surprised to see that this was our only time playing them in the FA Cup, and never in the Trophy. You'd have thought there'd be at least one qualifier from the 80s or 90s in there.

Highlights on the Moors website. Very entertaining. Both teams could’ve scored ten.

A trip down National League North lane. Standard of defending on both sides appalling. Inability to deal with pace down the flanks or crosses coming in. Defenders failing to pick up around the box. Hopeless defending at set pieces. Lack of sharpness more evident as the game heads to its conclusion.

Difference between the two sides ultimately was a bit of fitness and pace and a height advantage up front. Merthyr defensively were dreadful and could not seem to get off the ground to defend crosses..

So based on that game, the main threat from Spennymoor will come from set pieces and crosses into the box. I’m sure they will try and play a different game against us and will certainly create a threat. It’s the FA Cup and it always raises the game of the underdog. But on that viewing they also have quite a few limitations that you’d expect at that level.

They are at home to AFC Field tonight. That might give us a better indication of their threat level.
