the most common strains of flu maybe - but every now and again their is a stronger strain with similar effects to this. like the 1918 "Spanish Flu" which led to 550,000 deaths in the US alone.
I'm not sure what your point is in comparing the 1918 spanish flu... The vaccination programmes for decades since make this pointless.
This virus needs to be treated individually and it's demand on high dependency treatment, the spaces for such treatment and the lack of staff to deliver the treatment.
I guess that the point of comparison would be that Spanish flu was a new strain of virus that ravaged an unvaccinated population. Most recovered naturally but it led to estimates of death worldwide between fifty and one hundred million.
COVID 19 is a new strain of virus now at large worldwide and nobody has been vaccinated against it.
Over the last century, however, medical knowledge, testing and dissemination of knowledge have increased significantly and public health structures have improved.
To dismiss COVID 19 as "just like a cold" is not helpful, however.

I've not suggested it is just like a cold, in fact quite the opposite.

that was my exact point in the Spanish flu/COVID 19 comparison.

Not being funny or owt but surely anyone with serious underlying problems should maybe stay at home and the rest of us just carry on, catch it and get on with it?
I don't see why the world is in complete meltdown if the majority will simply get over it?

...because you don't have to have a serious underlying problem to spread it? I hope it doesn't get to the stage of locking out the crowds but I also hope that if you are coughing and/or sneezing (the main way the Covid is spread) then you wouldn't trivialise it as 'just a cold' and think that you are otherwise healthy. It's about the spread man, the spread...

Because the elderly or people at risk would all catch it from family who may not even show symptoms and then the hospitals would be overrun, that would then push the percentage of fatalities up much higher because there would be nowhere near enough high dependency care beds.

People should think about others and the possible consequences, rather than being concerned that they can't watch a football match in a stadium.
If I had it and gave it to my grandparents and they died (not impossible as they have underlying health problems) I would never forgive myself.
Puts it into perspective doesn't it?

Sadly the people bleating onabout "snowflakes" don't think about much more than themselves and whether they can watch a football match. I wonder how quickley their opinions would change if 4 or 5 of our best players caught the virus and couldn't play for weeks? In any case, UEFA have just arranged meeting to consider the possible suspension all their competions and all domestic competitions under their juristication which includes Barrow so everybody will know what is going to happen before long. If there is not either a temporary stop, a complete stop or matches only allowed behind closed doors, I will be amazed.

ABSOLUTELY in agreement!
The many Neville Chamberlains on this forum, '
everything's OK, nothings going to happen, closing grounds, etc.' are only concerned with not being able to watch a stupid game of football, and they seem to have no concern of the reality of the serious health consequences, that large crowds will spread the virus and some will die as a result.
That's a fact and that's the reality.

I imagine the Wrexham game on Saturday may be the last for a while if it isn't postponed before then.

No. As ive said, games behind closed doors are utterly pointless and will damage many clubs.
Can't see it being practical to have a break and start again due to the knock-on effect, so the alternative is to expunge this season and we have to start all over again! Do you want that?
Lol. they wont cancel the season dont be so stupid. Having a break would be far better than behind closed doors games.

The mass panic from some people really is amusing.
