Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
Yeah - he didn't have a go at the fans as bluebird implied - he must have got his wires crossed.
One thing that did come across was when he said he'd had a family bereavement during the week That would affect anyone, and has to be taken into account.

Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
The fans in the main stand when they were leaving earlier weren’t having a go at Wingh from what I saw. They were talking to him discussing where do we go from here. He looked demoralised and confused at what he had witnessed. Maybe he has lost the team !
Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
Whatever has happened this week, if he thought we played well in that first half then he's watched a different game to me and anyone else around me. Harpers header from a corner was a chance but that aside can't recall anything on target in that first half.
Second half Adu-Poku should score but blasted it over, Hemmings was a chance but the keeper did well came off his line quick and it was a chance out of nothing.
Back to the old working our socks off quotes which hadn't been heard for a while, I don't doubt the effort but there's a lack of direction and leadership on the pitch, and quality.
2 defeats in 9 Whing argued but you can also read it 1 league win in 6...
Newport away is a must win really they look doomed, if we don't then so might we be...

I don't think he has lost the team at all.
I think it's just that the quality we signed is now coming home to roost.

And while the board may sack a manager, it's highly unlikely that they'll sack a fellow board member, who is equally - possibly more - to blame for the poor signings.Blue Bayou wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:50 pm

Unfortunately I think he has and had before Rob Kelly came in. Body language after they scored was dreadful and when the opportunity arose in second half to come as a group to touchline to get instructions whisk a player got treatment on two occasions nobody did. I think we have decent players and enough to keep up but they need to be coached and set up better IMO. Unfortunately as nice as guy as Whing is I don't think that will happen under him.Blue Bayou wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:50 pmI don't think he has lost the team at all.

Then he should have taken time out !, it's no good if you're not focused as a manager and in the long term he's not helping his mental health!Barrow afc 2018 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:48 pmThat’s not a good situation for the lad, very sorry to hear that family comes first always.Main Stand SeasonTct wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:35 pm

Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
We've got some decent players it's the system and coaching ( or lack of it) that's killing us !, the players need strong leadership and Whing hasn't got it , you only have to listen to his interviews to realise he's not that confident in his own abilities because everyone we play is a good team and have a great manager!Blue Bayou wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:50 pmI don't think he has lost the team at all.

There can be no excuses whatsoever for that performance. We were dire, no impetus as promised from the off with too many individuals having an off day as you couldn’t call that shower a team.

Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
A timid performance and failure to finish a couple of good chances cost us all three points, Cambridge’s relative incisiveness exploiting our defensive weaknesses, scoring two and only failing to score two or three more due to fine saves by Winterbottom. In contrast, we only really tested their goalkeeper twice, often putting wide even when we were in with a chance.
Meanwhile it was sod’s law that Regan Booty, who we sent on loan to Boreham Wood this week, made a goal and scored a goal in their 3-0 win at Gateshead.
Stanway’s concussion protocol absence saw Winterbottom between the sticks, and he performed well, first called upon only six minutes in as Mpanzu put K.Smith through on goal.
A couple of minutes later, we were on the attack as Hemmings shot wide of the left post following a cross from Gordon.
Another couple of minutes later, Winterbottom made another save, this time from Appere.
In the 20th minute, McConnell headed wide from a Brophy cross as we struggled to make much impact on the game.
On the half-hour we finally had a very good chance. From a Jackson right hand corner, Harper headed wide of the left post from close range.
K.Smith was carded for fouling Newby in the 37th minute but Jackson’s free kick was easily saved.
Two minutes later Newby was fouled again and this time McCann took the free kick near the left touchline. We finally tested Eastwood, who tipped it away for a corner.
In the 42nd minute we had another great chance. After an excellent run by the ever-industrious Mahoney, he crossed to Newby who skied from close range.
Our two missed chances would come to haunt us in the second half. While the crowd were hopeful we would “up our game”, Cambridge had other ideas. It took them less than 4 minutes to open the scoring. In the 48th minute, Appere headed wide from a Bennett cross. The next minute, after easily penetrating our wide open defence, a goalmouth scramble ensued. Winterbottom blocked a McConnell shot but was unable to stop Mpanzu capitalizing on the rebound for 1-0.
In the 53rd minute, Cambridge’s McConnell went down injured and had to be replaced by Kaikai.
Ten minutes later, Mahoney also went down and had to be replaced by Adu-Poku. Earing came on for Harper at the same time.
However, Cambridge still threatened our goal and, in the 70th minute, Winterbottom had to bravely save at the feet of Appere. A minute later, only Winterbottom’s acrobatics kept the scoreline at 1-0 as a KaiKai corner resulted in a Morrison header which was tipped onto the bar and then saved.
With quarter of an hour of normal time remaining, Cambridge replaced Brophy and Appere with Knight and Kachunga. We sent on Fletcher for Whitfield.
Our build-ups had been slow and laboured with possession too easily lost. With time running out a little more urgency was found but it was too little, too late.
In the 78th minute a McCann shot was easily dealt with. In the 85th minute Gordon was booked for a foul on goalscorer Mpanzu. After Adu-Poku hit another Barrow effort wide, Mpanzu was himself carded in the 90th minute for a reckless challenge on Jackson which was borderline red.
However, Mpanzu remained on the field and a minute later- the first of added time- would double his goal tally for the game following an assist from Kachunga.
Another avoidable goal conceded and fans were venting their frustration. Despite an excellent block by Eastwood in the 95th minute to deny Fletcher a consolation goal, the 2-0 final scoreline did not flatter Cambridge.
Attendance was 3,024 including 265 visiting fans. Newby was awarded Barrow’s man of the match. With two defeats on the trot after our unbeaten run, we are sadly now only 4 points above the relegation places.

Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
In which case the 15 professional footballers who got on that pitch today - and who will have known his circumstances - should have used a bit of gumption and their collective brain cell to work out things weren't good enough and to do something about it.blue nige wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 7:03 pmThen he should have taken time out !, it's no good if you're not focused as a manager and in the long term he's not helping his mental health!Barrow afc 2018 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 6:48 pm

Don't let the old man in.
Re: Barrow v Cambridge United, match thread
IMO Kelly gave the players confidence and self belief.
AW doesn't. It was clear for long periods in the second half no one wanted responsibility. We had a late rush as usual but in over 90 mins we just don't create enough.
Whether that's just poor recruitment is debatable but the negative tactics don't help.
I think what's important for Newport is don't lose......
AW has practiced that tactic often enough.

I only got to taste the Rollover on the pitch today. What were those from the food huts like?
