New Roof
Re: New Roof
There are a good few comments on this thread/forum that either come from people that were only children/spoilt bar stewards or just trying to be wind up merchants.
Can we not just be grateful for the magnitude of effort and commitment our BOD/volunteers/trust have put into upgrading our ground. I know I certainly am.

Re: New Roof
I wasn't suggesting the ex Barnet stands as an option because you're right the roof certainly wouldn't reach the front of the Holker End terracing I mentioned it purely as an example of the new type of lightweight stand covers that don't require deep foundations and can easily be dismantled and moved to a new location as Exeter did and no doubt whoever buys the other one will too.Exeter bluebird wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:29 pmThe Barnet stand is the away end at Exeter but wouldn't be deep enough. Would have only covered the back half of the HSE
Surprised to hear about the seats being put in the end I would have thought a better option and i.m pretty sure there would be room in the corner to hire and erect a prefabricated 200/300 capacity temporary " golf " stand. I see there's a nice 7k capacity one going cheap as it looks as if they've removed the one from Old Trafford over the summer but not so sure that would quite fit in the corner tho.

Everyone is grateful and everyone appreciates the money and time going into this. People are asking why the need for so many stanchions!!? These roofs are not that heavy surely.cuffy wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 8:00 pm There are a good few comments on this thread/forum that either come from people that were only children/spoilt bar stewards or just trying to be wind up merchants.

Re: New Roof
there are 13 pairs of stanchions on the new roof - there were 14 on the old roof....Jonty wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:19 pmEveryone is grateful and everyone appreciates the money and time going into this. the sizes and numbers will have been calculated by the design engineers to minimise costs. If the stanchions were further apart - say 10m instead of 5m then any steelwork and bracing in the roof section would have needed to be of a greater cross section and hence heavier which would in turn have led to bigger and heavier sections being used in the stanchions and bigger and possibly deeper piles being needed which would all have worked out more costly. Spreading the weight of the structure over less foundations would have also greatly increased foundation sizes. A bigger gap between the Stanchions could also have led to a higher risk of damage to the roof section in high winds which would obviously be unacceptable and potentially unsafe.
In a nutshell it's not just as easy as spacing out the stanchions more and therefore having less of them.

I’ll take your word for it that this was a cheaper and easier option than a full width hangar style king truss roof using lightweight modern materials, that would have placed little / no load bearing on the terrace or back wall. .

Re: New Roof
good - and unless the roof was hung from "sky hooks"* there's nothing that would have placed "little or no load bearing on the terrace or back wall"
* there will no doubt be new BAE apprentices soon waiting in the stores queuing up for these, long stands and tartan paint.....

Gets removed every year, there was just no point putting it back up this year for obvious reasonsNORTHERNSOUL wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:08 pm I see there's a nice 7k capacity one going cheap as it looks as if they've removed the one from Old Trafford over the summer but not so sure that would quite fit in the corner tho.

Just out of curiousity, why do they remove that 'quadrant' every year?HenneysKnee wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 7:43 amGets removed every year, there was just no point putting it back up this year for obvious reasonsNORTHERNSOUL wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:08 pm I see there's a nice 7k capacity one going cheap as it looks as if they've removed the one from Old Trafford over the summer but not so sure that would quite fit in the corner tho.

Re: New Roof
I would guess it’s a compromise between the weight and factoring in the weather (wind/gales) not purely to do with how heavy the roof structure will be Jonty.Jonty wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:19 pmEveryone is grateful and everyone appreciates the money and time going into this. Between what the club will have done with the designers and the explanations chipmunx has given I think that all sounds quite reasonable.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Re: New Roof
Nobody else for the last 25 years have come close to doing any major works at the ground so well done
Re: New Roof
Assume when people talk about Barnet, they mean this sort of thing? To me this cover looks very flimsy and likely to blow away in a mild breeze - I'm sure it won't, but it still has a temporary feel.
