Match Thread - Guiseley v Barrow

A weird but extremely entertaining match that really was a "game of two halves". No doubting we were better in the first period and although the 3-0 scoreline flattered us slightly we did something we have often failed to do on our travels and were clinical in front of goal.

I couldn't quite work out what formation we were playing (4-4-2 or 4-3-3) as Wilson played slightly to the right but mainly through centre and in the midfield we had Pilks out on left wing and Harvey slightly to the right but effectively him, Crowther and Cowps dominating the centre of the park. This did leave a bit of a gap in front of Burns at times which Guiseley did not exploit though some of this was down to Burns's usual workrate.

In the second half Pilks just went missing completely but bizarrely also seemed to switch to the right which left a huge gaping hole on our left side and McWilliams was exposed time and again. We also started hoofing it forward and surrendering possession time and time again rather than how we had kept it well at times in the first half. These things combined were what cost us the impetus in the game and the two goals , however great credit must be given to Guiseley as they really upped the tempo and came at us playing some lovely passing football to open us up. In particular their number 10 (Oli Johnson) and 7 (Brooksby?) were excellent and along with Bogle of Solihull and Walshaw of Harrogate are possibly the best attacking threats I have seen this season.

The second yellow for Crowther was just plain stupidity and spoiled what I thought had been a decent performance from him (especially first half) but actually we looked more secure with ten than we had previously and although there were a few chances the last 15 minutes was not the onslaught I expected. Worth mentioning that McMillan had the most commanding and convincing display I have seen from him in the Barrow goal always looking in control of the aerial threat.

Overall a cracking day out and overjoyed to get 3 points.

Bloody belting day.

First half we were better the them but still not quite sure how it was 3-0 at HT.
Second half was a write off, i came out of the bar at 3-1 thinking it was still 3-0 so was wondering why everyone was panicking late on. Showed a lot of spirit and characted and that's the main thing, got the win.

Massive win that.
Drank two pints of water and had a vitamin tablet, don't think that;ll be enough, hangover coming!

Words cannot begin to describe the enormity of what we achieved today. Lets not forget that we were in effect missing SEVEN of our squad (three out on loan,three injured and one suspended). A completely new centre-mid partnership and the four lads on the bench (excluding injured Shez) have barely started half a dozen games between them. We faced an experienced side bang in form with victories in the past week over two sides themselves on the up.When it got to 2-3 I had visions of us caving in completely but reckoned without the obvious spirit within the camp.

lets not be over dramatic eh, those that were out on loan would've got nowhere near anyway and only Walker, Reid and Lacey were notable absentees. If we couldn't cover for that with the squad we've got though then I'd be worried.

Strange game today, not quite sure how we went in 3 up and then we really had to hang on second half. Points are what matter though and its ours to lose now.

Wasn't being over dramatic. Simply trying to emphasise how we were down to the bare bones including a player on the bench who wasn't even fit to play. In the circumstances it made the result even better.

McMillan was outstanding yesterday. Stupid unnecessary bookings could have cost us.
Pilkington barely moving when subbed, made for a scenario of the ref jogging alongside him and when the ref stopped to speak to a Guiseley player complaining Pilks stopped with them as if he expected an escort off the pitch.

Yet again Andy Burns received a head injury----another lump the size of an Ostrich egg. I have an intimate knowledge now of Burnseys skull. If this continues until the end of the season he will be a patient in Dane Garth by the end of it.
A good craic with the Guiseley fans where we were sitting made for a good day out and a happy coach home.
Now for Worcester. Bring it on.

He shouldn't be calling anyone a moron on the radio and Andy Wood should have intervened to apologise on his behalf. Thought AW might have been more alert to it after the Bayliss bad language furore.

Russell Dodd offers a lot as a summariser but often lets himself down with an over-partisan approach, shouting in the background of commentary and, in a recent match, arguing in the background with opposition supporters.

I find that quite amusing and human; the kind of thing I like about non league. Name calling is poor but we've all done it no doubt and its only briefly expressing disappointment with our heroes who are are heroes most of the time.

Back to the biz, a superb result for us, we have an outstanding squad and we have the rub of the green somehow, you can go a long way on that and I think we will.

Great win, the text trail from Lancaster Dave, encompassing Yorkshire comments, beer review, a meat raffle report and 'you'd be loving this' at a later point from the debate in the club bar makes me even more sorry I missed it!

Sounded a cracking match on the radio. For once we actually played like the side the money has bought. McMillan had a cracker..all his experience came out. It shows just how well we can play. I have said before that Cowps on the right in midfield is the better option. He can even do the winger bit or slip back in defence.
The League is now sorting itself out with all the usual suspects [cept Chorley and Fylde] in the fold.
Here we go..Barrow to win and Stockport promoted thru the play-offs. :flag:

Guiseley looked a very good side second half and had us on the back foot with a good range of passing and lightning quick breaks. It's going to take some performances from teams in this league to get anything from them.

I thought Harvey scored the second goal with a good header under pressure.

Just playing the game back in my head. Tony McMillan played a blinder. full stretch tip over the bar from one shot and was really assured in the box when they were throwing it at us.

Yes and no. I reckon you were quite drunk but you were making sense to me in the bar beforehand

Wilson scored with a deflection that the announcer tried to credit as an own goal I think. ARH did indeed score from a header from about 3 yards out when getting between a defender and the keeper. Pilks got the other tucking it away in the corner

At least that is how I remember it.

Excellent game, excellent performance. Brilliant to get another 3 points out of them. Really pleased with how we hung on.

Crap selection of food however, no pies and hot dogs were pretty much the only thing on the menu. Got to stand next to a huge dog/horse though.

A lot of bouncers in the ground, very strange attempt at trying to steward a football match.
