Pleased we are part of this again, the competition having been revived about ten years ago, after a gap of several years. Around the sixties there were some decent games in this completion against first and second division teams who usually played their reserve teams and were often a fair match for us from the third/fourth division. Burnley were the exception; under the control of their infamous chairman Bob Lord, as a first division outfit they tended to play a full-strength first team and over a period of twelve years won it more often than not. In 1966 they beat Barrow 4-0 in the final at Holker Street in front of 7158.
There were several games against Manchester United, for example losing 0-3 at Old Trafford in 63-4 in front of 4705 and home games in 67-8 (won 3-1, 7223) and 68-9 (lost 1-3, 6777) and Liverpool at home in 65-6, home in front of 5576.

Also played them in 69-70. A 0-0 draw at Holker Street, and we won the replay at Old Trafford 2-1 after extra time. The Stretford End were singing "Barrow for Europe" !Hadrian wrote:

IIRC all teams had to play a certain number of 1st team players not sure if it was 5, 6 or 7. When we beat Man Utd at Old Trafford seem to remember that Mick Hartland had Nobby Stiles in his pocket.Hadrian wrote:Which teams?Darcy3 wrote:Quite a few pay the fine to Lancs FA and don't play

Pay the fine - avoid this competition. It's worthless. CONCENTRATE on the League and FA Cup...
OR play a youth team/team made up of fringe-team squad members.

Re: Lancashire Senior Cup
I remember that replay well, even though I wasn't at the game. The match was originally scheduled for Feb 10th, which I guess must have been during the school half term as a group of us planned on going there by train; the opportunity to see Barrow at Old Trafford was too good to ignore.xerxes wrote: Also played them in 69-70. Despite it being a sunny day in Barrow, Old Trafford was snowbound and the match was off. Luckily, a couple of us found this out from a passer by on the Abbey Road bridge (we checked this by phone from the Post Office; in the days of a fully manual exchange, we just asked the operator then pressed button B to get our 4d back).
Some of our mates were already on the train, and we called across to them that the game was off; they thought that we were winding them up ... right until the moment that the train pulled out of the station with us waving goodbye to them.
They went to see Oldham v (I think) Lincoln.
We couldn't get to the rearranged game on Mar 11th - it must have been a school day - but were playing football in the Cage, behind the Coronation Gardens, and phoned up from the call box at the bottom of Holker Street to get the result
So excited were we when the operator told us that Barrow had won that we (almost) forgot to press button B to get our money back!
