Not sure of the guys name but there was an obituary in today's Eve Mail that referred to a Mr Bill Ablitt.
I am almost sure this is the same guy who used to run away travel buses years ago and has been a regular on the popular side for many a moon.As I say not sure. Anyone ?

That also rings a bell with me. Was he not also an ex-manager of some discipline in the Steelworks/Hoopworks?

Very sorry to learn of this; I believe he was a stalwart supporter of many decades and, unless mistaken, his wife and various other family members are also regulars on the terraces. Condolences to all on this sad news . . . his absence on match-days will definitely be noticed.

(Mods . . . any chance please that the surname can be added to the thread title so that people don't overlook this news?)

I think Bill was an overseer for the navy in the shipyard, {stand to be corrected} he also helped the club financially on occasions, ran the supporters bus with a no nonsense regime.

That could well be, since I moved to the 'Yard' as a Draffy before closure of the Steelworks. Will keep an open mind in hope of definite solution by some other poster. Either way, sorry to hear of his death.

Hi everybody.

I'm Bills granddaughter, he passed away peacefully at FGH last Thursday, he had been ill for a few months with different things & he was admitted to hospital on Sunday night, he was in ICU from Monday to the Thursday.

He was a Production Manager in the yard for over 30 years.

He loved watching the football on the popular side with his wife, son & me!

Thank you for everyone's messages.

Hope some can make it on Friday, be nice to see some!

Xxx

I was the Liaison Draughtsman working between Dock-side and Drawing offices. Meetings were arranged between heads of trade departments, ships manager and installation manager to rectify on site any clashes or anomalies picked up from drawings when actual installation occurred. The agreed paths taken were fed back to the respective office and the affected drawing modified. It was an innovative idea at the time, since Swann Hunter Newcastle and Lairds in Liverpool were the follow up producers of the Type 42 Destroyer. It was important that as far as possible the ships would be identical, easing further installation problems and making interchangeability of parts easier. Of course Bill was a key player in this process.

Regards.
