Plenty of first half chances for Barrow, Halifax rally in second- but still 0-0 at end

It was all change for Barrow AFC with nine of the starting eleven making their Holker Street debut. On a bright but showery evening, 1,410 including 76 visiting fans saw Barrow dominate the first half, Halifax the second and the 0-0 draw a fair result.
Six minutes in, a sharp 25 yard strike from Barrow captain Asa Hall grazed the crossbar and, soon after, a good attack by Gomis and Yussuf won the first corner. Dan Jones’ kick was put out of touch which then gave a first chance to witness his long-throw into the area. Unfortunately, tonight, no-one in the area could take advantage of this skill.
In the 16th minute, Martin Riley was booked for a tackle near the edge of the area, injuring himself in the process. After he was replaced by Ben Tomlinson, Jordan White’s free kick sailed over the bar.
In the 24th minute, Shay keeper Sam Johnson made a brave save at the feet of Adi Yussuf as Barrow kept up the pressure. Two minutes later, a ball forward from Alex-Ray Harvey was met by Jack Barthram in the area, who headed just wide of the right post from close range.
Tom Denton was then booked for the visitors as it seemed host a matter of time before Barrow would score the elusive goal. However, out of nowhere, Connor Oliver raced down the right wing and unleashed a 30 yard drive which clipped Moore’s crossbar, a 34th minute let-off for Barrow against the run of play.
Three minutes later, another Barrow corner resulted in Jimmy Dunne directing a header into the arms of Johnson. In the 40th minute, Barthram again found himself in the area near the right post, this time shooting wide. Three minutes later, a ball from Alex-Ray Harvey ball gave Yussuf a sharp strike on goal- but Johnson just managed to save the shot.
Half a dozen good attempts on goal by Barrow in the first half, yet the score was still 0-0. It seemed only a matter of time, but the second half was a different story altogether.
Six minutes in a dangerous attack by Dixon and Tomlinson gave Oliver a good chance on goal but he shot over the bar. Two minutes later, Halifax won their first corner of the game and the visiting fans spurred the players on to further efforts, Scott McManus feeding Dion Charles for a 59th minute shot which was blocked on the line by a Barrow defender, A minute later, after Gomis fouled McManus, an Oliver free kick sailed over the bar. Gomis was then booked for fouling Wilde.
Fresh legs were required, Dan Cockerline and Liam Hughes replacing White and Barthram. Cockerline also made an immediate impact as Johnson was forced into a save from close range. In the 75th minute, Cockerline was tripped near the edge of the area but Hughes free kick was tipped over the bar by Johnson.
Halifax then brought on Matty Kosylo coming on for Ben Tomlinson while Barrow replaced Alex-Ray Harvey with Bradley Bauress.
Both Barrow and Halifax launched attacks in the last 10 minutes but the score remained goalless. In summary, a frustrating second half after a promising first, but more time is required for the players to properly gell. Jack Barthram was awarded Barrow’s man of the match.
