Warm sun heralded the first game of a new era following Paul Cox’s mid-week departure with the new floodlight poles standing alongside the old pylons. The 1,154 crowd, including 46 visitors, enjoyed a frantic first 5 minutes. Maidenhead launched an attack straight from their kick off towards the Cross Bar end, a run by Sam Barratt down the left giving Adrian Clifton a shot which sailed over the bar with only 20 seconds gone. Two minutes later a long throw by Dan Jones reached Alex-Ray Harvey in the area whose header gave Moussa Diarra a chance from close range. This also went over, but a minute later at the other end a Jake Hyde shot required a save from Stuart Moore. Barrow then had two corners before the game was 5 minutes old!
In the 22nd minute, Jake Goodman was booked for a foul on Harry Panayiotou, Jones’ free kick being put out for another Barrow corner. Played short, it came to nothing, but Christian Smith then fouled Bedsente Gomis, giving Jones another free kick, again leading to an inswinging corner which Pentney tipped over the bar.
Failure to take these chances cost Barrow as another incisive run by Barratt down the left bypassed Audel, his precise cross then giving Clifton a 28th minute tap-in for 0-1.
A minute later, Jones blocked an attempt by Hyde following a Odametey cross. In the 35th minute, we were on the ropes again as Hyde found Barratt; the No.11’s dangerous cross resulted in a close-range James Mulley header, forcing an excellent save from Moore.
Hyde was then replaced by Marks just before the break who soon set-off another run by Barratt which resulted in a corner for Barrow to defend.
However, Barrow had the last chance of the half. Nearly four minutes into added time Panayiotou superbly stopped a long ball forward by Audel and seconds later drilled just wide from close range.
At half-time Jack Barthram replaced Thierry Audel. Within two minutes of the restart a low shot from Jordan White was easily saved. Ten minutes into the half, the breakthrough was made. Following a foul on Gomis near the half-way line, a long Jones free kick found Moussa Diarra whose towering header gave Pentney no chance.
A couple of minutes later, Maidenhead had a similar long kick. Barratt’s effort also resulted in a close-range header- but Moore saved.
In the 66th minute, Adi Yussuf replaced Panayiotou. Three minutes later, a Liam Hughes shot clipped the bar, Jordan White then missing the opportunity to score from close range. Yussuf himself had a shot in the 73rd minute which went just wide. Byron Harrison then replaced White for our final change as we enjoyed a period of pressure, Diarra heading over and Jones shooting just over the bar.
In the last five minutes of normal time, Maidenhead brought on Upward and McKenzie for Clifton and Barratt. This set up a frantic four minutes of added time. Two minutes in a push on Hughes in the area brought a penalty shout. To rub salt in the wound, a foul on Gomis was then not given as Maidenhead raced forward. Next, a foul near the edge of the area was awarded to Maidenhead to set up a nail-biting free-kick finale. Christian Smith’s 94th minute shot was heading for the top corner- but Stuart Moore acrobatically tipped it over to rescue a point for Barrow.
Dan Jones was awarded Barrow’s man of the match for his penetrating long throws and free kicks, but Moussa Diarra’s defensive/attacking headers and Stuart Moore’s crucial saves were also vital on the day.
