Today`s defeat was the 18th time this season that Barrow had lost a match by a single goal in the league ( 6 at home 12 away ) which is a new record stretching back to their first season in 1901, the previous record for single goal defeats in a season was 17 ( 7 at home 10 away ) in the 1970/71 season.

Interesting fact that, it goes to show you how close we were to easily picking up another 15-20 points, small margins eh.

Interesting stat. But perhaps a little misleading.

The idea that you lose 18 games by only one goal would suggest that with a little tinkering and a bit of luck things might have been different and that perhaps you might be a much better team than the table suggests.

However if you look at the 70/71 season (and I remember it quite well) you'd have to say that this was one of our worst seasons in living memory. We were in total free fall , financially virtually bankrupt, and had a team that just weren't good enough. We didn't actually win a game that season until the beginning of November (Southend ironically). We had one more season in the FL but the writing was definitely on the wall.

Sometimes when you lose repeatedly by a single goal its because the opposition know that one goal would be enough. They dont need to go for a second. I think we've only once gone behind and won this season (Newport). So what apears like it might be the result of a run of bad luck is actually a serious weakness in the squad.

Some good points from SB, what I would be interested in is how many games we were winning with 5 - 10 mins remaining and then drew, and equally how many we were drawing, again with 5 - 10 mins to go, and then lost by the odd goal. Maybe that might paint a different picture

Interesting stat. What that shows is that we were competitive and could keep games close. However, based on reports, in a lot of those one goal defeats we barely created a chance. That said, it was our competitive nature which gave us our ace in the hole i.e. the goal-difference. End of the day, like staying up. we shouldn't be congratulating ourselves on being competitive. Losing is losing.

Is there any subject at all that you can't turn into an essay?

Suffolk talks a lot of sense, but he seems to have a "Three Paragraph Rule".

I'm not being critical. I'd want the man to do my coursework if I was a cheating little shit in university.

:D Well done Redweb for spotting the three para rule. Even I get bored with myself after that now. CB for what its worth I developed my rather long-winded style when I was doing my own coursework many decades ago as it was sort of expected in those days. Before that I was truly lost for words.

Can be a blessing in certain circumstances. Was once tasked with writing a business case for the release of several million quid from a Finance Director who never approved anything. Having turned me down numerous times I just decided to bombard him with updates, revisions, addenda and calculations until one day he pulled me into his office looked at me as if he wanted to kill me and through gritted teeth said. "I've approved your f*ckig Business Case. You can stop writing, f*ck off and leave me alone". Was temporarily elevated to legend status tho I told everybody a slightly different story.

Great story Suffolk!

Anyway here's a link to a stats website that will hopefully give all you geeks (including me) hours of endless entertainment of what and when Barrow did this season. Doesn't perhaps have everything but there is enough of something for everyone. Enjoy.
